Recall Roundup: Braking Problems, Safety Issues, and Mechanical Concerns
A total of 469 units of the 2007-2011 Bentley Continental GT, Continental GTC, and Continental Flying Spur that are equipped with the optional carbon ceramic brakes are heading back to dealers for a repair. In these vehicles, the stainless steel screws that secure the brake rotors could fail after exposure to salty driving conditions. This failure could reduce braking ability and increase the risk of a crash.
Starting in early November, Bentley dealers will replace the screws at no cost to the vehicle owner. Owners with questions can contact Bentley at 1-800-777-6923, referencing Bentley recall number RE13/14, or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall campaign ID number 13V484.
BMW is recalling a total of 76,191 vehicles to address a problem with insufficiently lubricated brake vacuum pumps that may fail, causing a reduction in braking power and increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will modify the cars so that lubrication of the component is not a problem in the future.
The affected models include:
- 2012-2014 BMW 320i and 328i, including xDrive
- 2012-2013 BMW 528i, including xDrive
- 2013-2014 BMW X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i
- 2012-2014 BMW Z4 sDrive28i
The recall begins in November of 2013. Owners with questions can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417, referencing NHTSA recall campaign ID number 13V454.
Because their air bag warning labels might peel off of the sun visor, Chevrolet is recalling 18,941 Camaros so that dealers can install new sun visors with labels that comply with federal safety standards. The affected vehicles were built for the 2013 and 2014 model year, and were manufactured between June 9, 2013, and September 6, 2013.
This recall is currently underway. The General Motors recall campaign number is 13284, and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V463. Owners can contact GM at 1-800-521-7300 with any questions.
Chevrolet is recalling 3,161 units of the 2013 and 2014 Cruze compact sedan, all equipped with a manual transmission. In these vehicles, which were built from January 24, 2013, through August 1, 2013, the right front half shaft could fracture and separate, causing the car to lose power and coast to a stop or to roll unexpectedly if parked without the parking brake activated.
All vehicle owners have been notified, and this recall is underway. Chevy dealers are replacing the half-shaft assemblies at no cost to the owners. The General Motors recall campaign number is 13276, and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V452. Owners can contact GM at 1-800-521-7300 with any questions.
Chevrolet is recalling 1,558 units of the 2013-2014 Sonic because of insufficient welds that could allow the fuel tank to separate from the vehicle, causing a fuel leak and increasing the risk of a fire. To resolve the problem, dealers will inspect the front fuel tank strap and repair it as is deemed necessary at no cost to the vehicle owner.
The recall is expected to start in November of 2013. Owners can contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300 with any questions, referencing GM recall campaign number 13296, or NHTSA recall campaign ID number 13V464.
General Motors Pickup Trucks
Certain versions of the redesigned 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 are heading back to dealerships to resolve a problem with the seatbacks and head restraints.
In vehicles built from August 1, 2013, through September 10, 2013, and in trucks equipped with manual reclining seatbacks, extra "play" may exist in either of the seatbacks. This means that if the truck is struck by another vehicle from behind, the head restraints may not protect occupants in the way they are intended, which could increase the risk for injury.
To resolve the problem, dealers will inspect the seatbacks and make necessary adjustments, at no cost to the vehicle owner. Owners have been notified, but if they have questions, they can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782. The GM recall number is 13323 and the NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V488.
Honda is recalling 344,187 units of the 2006-2008 Odyssey minivan to correct a problem with the braking system. In the affected vehicles, built from August 8, 2006, through September 8, 2008, software governing the Vehicle Safety Assist (VSA) system may cause the minivan to suddenly and unexpectedly brake very hard, increasing the risk of a rear-impact collision. In such situations, the brake lights do not illuminate, further increasing the possibility that another driver could rear-end the vehicle.
Parts to correct the problem are not available until the spring of 2014. In the interim, Honda is sending a letter to Odyssey owners instructing them how to prevent unintended braking. Then, when parts to resolve the problem are available, Honda dealers will repair the vehicle at no charge to the van's owners.
The first notification letters will be sent to owners in December of 2013. In the meantime, Odyssey owners who have questions can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's recall number is JC5 and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V500.
Lamborghini is recalling 667 units of the 2006-2010 Murcielago and the 2007-2009 Gallardo to resolve a problem with the stainless steel screws used to secure the optional carbon ceramic brake discs. In these vehicles, the screws may fail after the car is driven in salty conditions, leading to a reduction of braking capability and increased risk of a crash.
Starting in November of 2013, dealers will replace the screws at no cost to the vehicle owner. The NHTSA recall campaign ID numbers are 13V470 for the Murcielago and 13V471 for the Gallardo. Owners with questions can contact Lamborghini at 1-866-681-6276.
Nissan Armada and Titan
In 3,247 units of the 2013 Nissan Armada SUV and 2013 Nissan Titan pickup truck, the brake master cylinder may intermittently reduce the amount of pressure it is delivering to the front brakes, which could produce longer stopping distances than the driver expects and may increase the risk of a crash.
The affected vehicles were built from February 22, 2013, through May 3, 2013. Vehicle owners have been notified, and this recall is currently underway. Owners with questions can call Nissan at 1-800-647-7261, referencing NHTSA recall campaign ID number 13V451.
Nissan is recalling 2,310 units of the 2014 Pathfinder. The vehicles are equipped with the Almond-color interior, and were built from July 25, 2013, through September 5, 2013.
In these vehicles, the instrument panel tear seam for the front passenger air bag was incorrectly cut on the backside of the instrument panel. This could prevent the air bag from deploying properly in a collision, increasing the risk of passenger injury.
Starting in early November of 2013, dealers will replace the affected portion of the instrument panel assembly at no cost to the vehicle owner. Owners with questions can call Nissan at 1-800-647-7261, referencing NHTSA recall campaign ID number 13V456.
