Recall Roundup: BMW Recalls X5, X6 SUVs to Address Potential Front Driveshaft Universal Joint Failure

During the past week, more than 250,000 light passenger vehicles were recalled by various automakers, including BMW of North America (BMW), Ford Motor Co. (Ford), Nissan North America (Nissan), Porsche Cars North America (Porsche), Subaru of America (Subaru), Volkswagen Group of America (VW), and Volvo Car USA (Volvo). The largest recall this week comes from BMW and affects 121,737 vehicles from the 2011 through 2014 model years.

2011-2013 BMW X5, X5 M
2011-2014 BMW X6, X6 M
2011 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

  • Number of vehicles affected: 121,737
  • Issue: The affected vehicles include 2011-2013 BMW X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M and X5 xDrive35d; 2011-2014 BMW X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6 M; and 2011 BMW x6 ActiveHybrid vehicles. Water and debris may enter the front driveshaft's universal joint, causing excessive wear and possibly resulting in the joint's failure.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driveshaft free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 24, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2016-2017 Ford Edge
2016-2017 Lincoln Continental
2016-2017 Lincoln MKX

  • Number of vehicles affected: 27,531
  • Issue: In the event of a crash, the driver's frontal air bag may not fully inflate or the air bag cushion may detach from the air bag module.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag module free of charge.
  • Timing: Remedy parts are not currently available. Owners will be notified of the safety recall in March 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts are available, currently expected to be in August 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2012 Nissan Versa

  • Number of vehicles affected: 54,751
  • Issue: Degradation of the side-impact sensor connector pins may cause the curtain and seat-mounted air bags to deploy unexpectedly if the door is slammed.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a new jumper harness, and replace the side-impact satellite sensors free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

2017 Porsche Macan GTS

  • Number of vehicles affected: 17,871
  • Issue: The passenger occupant detection sensor mat may fail in the front passenger seat, deactivating the front passenger air bag.
  • Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the sensor mat and seat cushion free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243.

  • Number of vehicles affected: 120
  • Issue: In the affected 2016 911 GT3 RS and 911 R vehicles and 2017 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera Cabriolet, 911 Carrera 4, 911 Carrera 4S, 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, 911 Targa 4, 911 Targa 4S, 911 Turbo S, 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, 718 Boxster, 718 Boxster S, 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S vehicles, the passenger frontal air bag inflator initiator may fail to ignite during a crash.
  • Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected air bags free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243.

2017 Porsche 911
2017 Porsche 718 Boxster, 718 Boxster S

  • Number of vehicles affected: 21
  • Issue: Porsche is recalling certain 2017 911 Carrera Cabriolet, 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, 911 Targa S, 911 Targa 4S, 911 Turbo Cabriolet, 718 Boxter and 718 Boxter S vehicles. During manufacturing, the windshield may not have been properly bonded to the vehicle, allowing it to detach in a crash.
  • Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will rebond the windshield free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243.

2017 Subaru Impreza

  • Number of vehicles affected: 25,567
  • Issue: Due to a software problem, the rearview camera display may not work properly.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will update the infotainment software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on March 20, 2017. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783.

2017 Volkswagen Beetle
2017 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

  • Number of vehicles affected: 797
  • Issue: The affected vehicles have incorrect information on the tire information label, possibly causing the operator to overload the vehicle.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a corrected tire information label free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in March 2017. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.

2017 Volvo XC60

  • Number of vehicles affected: 112
  • Issue: Volvo is recalling certain 2017 S60, S60 Cross Country, V60, V60 Cross Country, and XC60 vehicles. The affected vehicles have driver and front passenger seat side-mounted air bags (SAB) with inflator initiators that may fail to ignite during a crash.
  • Remedy: Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front-seat side air bags free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 31, 2017. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552.
