Recall Roundup: BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Subaru, Toyota Announce Significant Recalls

    During the past week, four auto manufacturers selling new cars and trucks in the United States recalled a total of 402,737 light vehicles. The largest of these recalls comes from BMW, which cites issues with the fuel pump wires in 136,188 vehicles from the 2007 through 2011 model years. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Subaru, and Toyota Motor Corp. also issued sizeable recalls. Details for each safety recall are on the pages that follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

    2010-2012 BMW 5 Series; 2012 BMW 6 Series; 2007-2011 BMW X5; 2008-2011 BMW X6

    • Number of vehicles affected: 136,188
    • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2007 through 2011 model years.
    • Issue: BMW is recalling certain model-year 2007-2011 BMW X5 3.0si, X5 4.8i, X5 M, X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, and X5 xDrive50i; 2008-2011 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i, and X6 M; 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid, 535i xDrive Gran Turismo, 535i Gran Turismo, 550i xDrive Gran Turismo, and 550i Gran Turismo; 2011-2012 528i, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, and 550i xDrive; and 2012 535i ActiveHybrid, 640i Convertible, 650i Convertible, 650i xDrive Convertible, 650i Coupe, and 650i Coupe xDrive vehicles. The affected vehicles have in-tank fuel pumps that may have insufficiently crimped wire contacts. The loose wires may cause the connector to melt, resulting in a fuel leak. Additionally, the fuel pump may stop working, possibly causing an engine stall and increase the risk of a crash.
    • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module free of charge.
    • Timing: The recall is expected to begin December 5, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

  • 2013 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty photo

    2011-2014 Dodge Charger Police; 2013 Ram 2500, Ram 3500; 2007-2013 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis; 2008-2013 Ram 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis

    • Number of vehicles affected: 74,823
    • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2007 through 2014 model years.
    • Issue: FCA is recalling certain model-year 2011-2014 Dodge Charger Police, 2007-2013 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis, 2008-2013 Ram 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis, and 2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 vehicles. The affected vehicles have a 220-amp alternator that may suddenly fail. If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. There is also the possibility that the alternator may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
    • Remedy: FCA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the alternator with a revised alternator free of charge.
    • Timing: Parts are not currently available, but beginning on November 25, 2016 owners will be notified of the recall and they will be sent a second letter when remedy parts are available. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

    2016 Dodge Viper

    • Number of vehicles affected: 14
    • Date of manufacture: May 24, 2016 through August 28, 2016
    • Issue: The wires for the driver's frontal air bag may be pinched. If the driver's air bag wires are pinched, the air bag may not deploy properly.
    • Remedy: Dodge will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag and clockspring free of charge.
    • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on November 18, 2016. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

  • 2014 Subaru Impreza Hatchback photo

    2009-2013 Subaru Forester; 2008-2014 Subaru Impreza; 2007-2009 Subaru Legacy; 2007-2009 Subaru Outback

    • Number of vehicles affected: 100,127
    • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2007 through 2014 model years.
    • Issue: Subaru is recalling certain model-year 2007-2009 Legacy and Outback vehicles, 2008-2014 Impreza vehicles, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, all equipped with turbocharged engines. The relay that controls the secondary air-injection pump may fail, causing the pump to continuously operate and overheat. If the air-injection pump overheats it may melt and increase the risk of a fire.
    • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the secondary air-injection pump relay free of charge.
    • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783.

  • 2016 Toyota Prius photo

    2016-2017 Toyota Prius

    • Number of vehicles affected: 91,585
    • Date of manufacture: August 6, 2015 through October 3, 2016
    • Issue: A foot-operated parking brake system with a cable may disengage. If the parking brake cable disengages from the mechanism and the transmission is left in a gear other than “Park” while the ignition is on and the driver leaves the vehicle, the vehicle may roll unexpectedly.
    • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install a clip at the parking brake cable end to prevent the cable from disengaging. The repairs will be made free of charge to the vehicle owner.
    • Timing: The recall is expected to begin December 11, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.
