Recall Roundup: Automakers Recall Nearly 14 Million Vehicles to Fix Air Bag Inflators

Various automakers have issued recalls for more than 13.78 million cars, SUVs, and light-duty trucks, dating back to the 2002 model year. The overwhelming majority of these recalls come on account of issues with the vehicles’ air bags.

2004-2012 Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Sterling Vehicles

These inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
•    Remedy: Chrysler will notify the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM owners. Sterling and Mitsubishi owners will be notified by their respective companies. Dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge.
•    Timing: A notification schedule has not yet been provided. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2009-2016 Dodge Journey Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 10,944
•    Date of manufacture: July 31, 2007, to November 12, 2016
•    Issue: After exposure to cold temperatures, the power steering return hose may rupture at engine start-up causing a loss of power steering assist. A loss of power steering assist may require extra steering effort, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
•    Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering return hoses, steel tubes, and power steering oil cooler, free of charge.
•    Timing: The recall began on May 24, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2011-2016 Jeep Wrangler Right-Hand-Drive Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 7,180
•    Date of manufacture: February 16, 2010, to May 2, 2016
•    Issue: The clockspring assembly may become contaminated with dust and cause the air bag circuit to fail.
•    Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the clockspring, wheel back cover, and column shroud, free of charge.
•    Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler JK Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 394,258
•    Date of manufacture: March 2, 2006, to August 13, 2010

•    Date of manufacture: June 21, 2010, through January 12, 2016
•    Issue: The clutch diaphragm spring on these manual transmission vehicles may fracture and fail, causing an inability to switch gears.
•    Remedy: The remedy for this recall will include the installation of a clutch pedal limiter and a clutch pedal switch.
•    Timing: Interim notices will be mailed to owners in June 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2013-2016 Fiat 500e Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 16,549
•    Date of manufacture: March 22, 2012, to January 29, 2016
•    Issue: The power inverter module (PIM) may experience voltage spikes which can cause the propulsion system to shut down, with consequent loss of motive power.
•    Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the PIM software, free of charge.
•    Timing: Interim notices will be sent to owners in June 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy software become available. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2009-2011 Ferrari California Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 2,820
•    Date of manufacture: February 16, 2009, to July 29, 2011
•    Issue: Affected vehicles are equipped with air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
•    Remedy: Ferrari will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag assembly, free of charge.
•    Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Ferrari customer service at 1-866-551-2828.

2016 Lincoln MKX Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 5
•    Date of manufacture: September 24, 2015
•    Issue: An incorrect seat back trim cover was installed on the affected vehicles, blocking the child seat tether anchors in the second row center seating position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, “Child restraint anchorage systems.”
•    Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat back trim cover and tether cover bezel on the second row, free of charge.
•    Timing: The recall is expected to begin on June 13, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2013-2014 Ford F-150 Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 225,012
•    Date of manufacture: August 1, 2013, to August 31, 2014
•    Issue: The brake master cylinder reservoir may lose brake fluid into the brake booster. A loss of brake fluid may reduce or cause a complete loss of front brake function.
•    Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake master cylinder and, if necessary, the brake booster, free of charge.
•    Timing: The recall is expected to begin on July 11, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

Various 2008-2012 Ford, Lincoln Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 695
•    Date of manufacture: Recall affects 2008-2012 model years
•    Issue: Ford is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 Ford Flex, 2008 and 2010-2012 Ford Taurus, 2008-2009 Ford Taurus X, 2008 Mercury Sable, 2009 and 2011 Lincoln MKS vehicles. The driver frontal air bag may improperly inflate during second-stage deployment in the event of a high speed crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”
•    Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the driver’s frontal air bag module, as necessary, free of charge.
•    Timing: The recall is expected to begin on June 13, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 66
•    Date of manufacture: March 7, 2016, through March 12, 2016
•    Issue: The memory chip in the electronic brake control module (EBCM) may fail and cause the loss of electronically controlled brake systems including anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). As such, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 126, “Electronic Stability Control Systems.” If the EBCM fails the primary braking system will still function, however, the loss of ABS and ESC increase the risk of a crash.
•    Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a replacement EBCM, free of charge.

2014-2016 Maserati Quattroporte, Ghibli Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 26,464
•    Date of manufacture: February 1, 2013, to September 18, 2015.
•    Issue: During the assembly process, the rear tie-rod to hub assembly attaching bolt may not have been properly tightened. An improperly tightened rear tie-rod to hub carrier assembly attaching bolt may allow the tie-rod to separate from the hub carrier, resulting in a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
•    Remedy: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the left and right rear tie-rod to hub carrier assembly attaching bolts to verify that they are properly tightened, replacing the rear tie-rod to hub carrier assembly as necessary, free of charge.

•    Issue: Nissan is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45, 2003-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2006-2010 Infiniti M35 and M45, and 2007-2011 Nissan Versa vehicles, originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or “Zone A.” Additionally, unless included in “Zone A” above, Nissan is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45, 2003-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2006-2008 Infiniti M35 and M45, and 2007-2008 Nissan Versa vehicles, originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or “Zone B.” Lastly, unless included in “Zone A” or “Zone B” above, Nissan is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35 vehicles originally sold, or registered, in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. These inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
•    Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge.

2016 Volvo XC90 Vehicles
•    Number of vehicles affected: 29,697
•    Date of manufacture: January 27, 2015, to April 23, 2016
•    Issue: Sunroofs on the affected vehicles have a switch on the overhead console that may not be adequately recessed to prevent the switch from being unintentionally pressed. When pressed, the sunroof may fully close. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 118, “Power-Operated Window, Partition, and Roof Panel Systems.”
•    Remedy: Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software upgrade that disables the auto-close function, free of charge.
•    Timing: The recall is expected to begin June 20, 2016. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552 or by visiting http://Volvo.custhelp.com.
