Recall Roundup: Air Bag Inflator Issues Necessitate another Recall of Toyota, Lexus, Pontiac Vehicles

By Joseph Dobrian, March 07, 2016
During the past week, approximately 249,000 vehicles were recalled by Ford Motor Company and Toyota Motor. The Ford recalls concern vans and trucks from the 2015 and 2016 model years; the Toyota recalls include Lexus, Toyota, and Pontiac vehicles from the 2008-2010 model years. Details for each vehicle recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2016 Ford F-150
  • Number of vehicles affected: 2,894
  • Date of manufacture: April 27, 2015 to November 22, 2015
  • Issue: The front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) that calibrates the air bag deployment level may incorrectly classify an adult as a child when the seat massage feature is activated. If an adult is incorrectly classified as a child, the passenger frontal air bag will not deploy during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM) with new software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 7, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 16S05
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V110000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 48,990
  • Date of manufacture: February 13, 2014 to January 13, 2016
  • Issue: The rear seat belt buckles may be damaged if a heavy object is placed on, or impacts, the top of the buckle. The damage may prevent the buckle from latching or from remaining latched.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will modify or replace the seat belt buckles, depending on their location in the vehicle, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable.
  • Timing: Owners will be notified of the recall March 14, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 16S06
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V111000

2008-2010 Lexus SC
2008 Pontiac Vibe
2008 Toyota Corolla
2008 Toyota Matrix
  • Number of vehicles affected: 132,086
  • Date of manufacture: August 3, 2007 to July 30, 2010
  • Issue: A safety defect in the passenger-side frontal air bag inflator may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger-side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture, with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants.
  • Remedy: The respective dealers will either replace the front passenger air bag inflator or the entire front passenger air bag assembly, depending on the model.
  • Timing: Toyota and Lexus vehicle owners will be notified by Toyota beginning March 15, 2016. A date has not yet been provided for Pontiac Vibe owners to be notified by GM. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737.
  • Manufacturer recall number: This recall expands recall 15V-285.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V127000

2008-2010 Lexus SC
2008 Pontiac Vibe
2008 Toyota Corolla
2008 Toyota Matrix
  • Number of vehicles affected: 65,836
  • Date of manufacture: August 3, 2007 to July 30, 2010
  • Issue: Vehicles that were originally sold, or ever registered, in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The affected vehicles have a passenger-side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
