Recall Roundup: Acura, General Motors, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, and Volvo Issue Significant Recalls for a Variety of Models

By Jeff Youngs, March 26, 2013
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation has issued numerous recalls in the past week. Below are summaries of each, presented in alphabetical order by vehicle brand.

2005-2006 Acura MDX
Acura is recalling all MDX crossover SUVs built between September 16, 2004, and September 22, 2005. These vehicles may contain a damaged electrical capacitor within the stability control system's control module. This damaged part may cause automatic, intermittent, and minor brake application without driver input. If the driver uses the brakes when this malfunction is occurring, the MDX may come to a complete and abrupt stop, which increases the chance of a crash.

To fix the problem, Acura dealers will install a new partial wiring harness equipped with a new capacitor for the stability control system. This recall, NHTSA Campaign ID number 13V092000, is scheduled to begin April 12, 2013. Owners with questions can contact Acura at 1-800-382-2238.

The 2005 Acura RL and 2005 Honda Pilot are also included in this recall, which covers a total of 183,576 vehicles. See further details below.

2005 Acura RL
Acura is recalling the 2005 RL luxury sedan for the same stability control system issue outlined above for the Acura MDX. The recall covers 20,015 Acura RLs built between March 1, 2004, and June 29, 2005. Owners with questions can contact Acura at 1-800-382-2238.

2004-2008 Acura TSX

This recall, affecting the 2004-2008 Acura TSX, is separate from the stability recall issues for the MDX and RL, outlined above. Rather, this recall affects TSX models originally sold in or currently registered in states where corrosive elements are used to de-ice roads in winter. Drivers may bring these corrosive elements into the vehicle on their shoes, transferring them to the carpeting, which could promote rust and corrosion of the TSX's Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which, in turn, could cause the engine to fail. If the vehicle stalls, the risk of a crash increases.

This recall includes TSX models originally sold in or currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

Acura dealers will inspect the ECU of the recalled vehicles and replace damaged units free of charge. Dealers will also install a waterproof ECU cover at no charge. This recall begins April 11, 2013. Owners with questions can contact Acura at 1-800-382-2238. For reference, the NHTSA Campaign ID number is 13V093000 and the Acura recall ID number is S86.

2013 Buick LaCrosse
In 2013 Buick LaCrosse vehicles built between April 25, 2012, and March 6, 2013, incorrect software programming may cause the transmission to inadvertently shift into Sport mode, thereby eliminating the engine braking effect, which is mandated by law. To resolve this problem, Buick dealers will reprogram the transmission control module, beginning on March 28, 2013. Owners with questions can call Buick at 1-866-694-6546, referencing NHTSA Campaign ID number 13V097000 and General Motors recall ID number13053.

The 2013 Cadillac SRX is also included in this recall, which affects a total of 26,582 vehicles.

2013 Cadillac SRX
Announced in conjunction with the Buick LaCrosse recall detailed above, certain 2013 Cadillac SRX crossover SUVs built between May 29, 2012, and February 18, 2013, must be returned to the dealer for a software update to ensure the vehicle's compliance with federal regulations. Owners with questions can call Cadillac at 1-866-982-2339.

2011 Chevrolet Express
A small number of 2011 Chevrolet Express vans converted to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) by Impco Automotive may have an incorrectly assembled pressure relief vent pipe assembly. As a result, CNG may be vented into the passenger compartment of the 48 affected vehicles, causing an explosion or a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

The affected units were built between November 23, 2010, and December 23, 2010, and the recall is expected to begin at the end of March 2013. Owners with questions can contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300, referencing NHTSA Campaign ID number 13V080000 and GM recall ID number 13065.

2005 Honda Pilot
This recall for the 2005 Honda Pilot is the same as the one detailed above for the Acura MDX and Acura RL, but with a slight twist.

In addition to requiring a new partial wiring harness containing a new capacitor for the stability control system, these Honda Pilots, built between June 29, 2004, and August 29, 2005, may have a loose ground connection. As a result, when the stability control system applies slight automatic braking or it is applied in conjunction with driver use of the brakes during a malfunction (sudden hard braking), the Pilot's brake lights may not illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash.

Honda dealers will tighten the Pilot's ground connection at the same time they receive the new wiring harness. Owners seeking additional information can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. The NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V092000.

2012-2013 Nissan NV Van
Nissan needs to make repairs to 18,880 examples of its full-size 2012-2013 NV Van models, which were built from December 20, 2010, through January 4, 2013. In these vehicles, the steering column-mounted transmission lever's gear selector plate lock clip might have been incorrectly installed. As a result, the gear position indicator may not match the actual gear selected. For example, the indicator might say the van is in park, but it may not be and could roll away if unattended.

The recall begins April 8, 2013. Owners with questions can contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261, referencing NHTSA Campaign ID number 13V09500.

2007-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Toyota is developing a remedy for a problem with 209,000 units of the FJ Cruiser SUV, built for the 2007-2013 model years. In the FJ Cruiser, the driver and front passenger seat belt retractors are mounted to the SUV's rear access panels. If those access panels are repeatedly slammed over an extended period of time, cracks may develop in the access panel. If cracks occur near the seat belt retractor anchor, the retractor could become detached, increasing the risk of injury in an accident.

Until Toyota finds a remedy for this problem, the recall cannot begin. Owners seeking additional information can call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331, referencing NHTSA Campaign ID number 13V093000.

2013 Volvo S60 and XC60
Seven examples of the 2013 Volvo S60 and Volvo XC60, built on January 7, 2013, have an incorrect date of manufacture on their certification labels, which means that in the event of future recalls, they would likely not be properly included in a recall, potentially exposing passengers to safety risk. However, the vehicles were never sold and will have new certification labels installed prior to going on sale.
