Recall Roundup: 2014-2018 Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ Sedans Recalled to Tighten Steering Wheels

During the past week, various automakers recalled a total of 1,693,449 light passenger vehicles, dating back to the 2007 model year. The largest recall involves 1,301,986 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans, from the 2014 through 2018 model years, that may have a problem with the steering wheel retaining bolt.

Details for each safety recall follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,505
  • Issue: The software for the wiper motor may incorrectly interpret the wiper motor as overheating, limiting the windshield wipers to operating only at the low-speed setting.
  • Remedy: FCA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper motor free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 25, 2018. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2011 BMW X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i

  • Number of vehicles affected: 17,008
  • Issue: The rear spoiler may not have been properly attached during assembly, or may be missing screws, possibly causing the spoiler to detach while driving.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spoiler, correcting its attachment as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 1, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2014-2018 Ford Fusion
2014-2018 Lincoln MKZ

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,301,986
  • Issue: The steering wheel retaining bolt may loosen, allowing the steering wheel to detach while driving.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt with a longer bolt free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 30, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2017-2018 Kia Optima Hybrid

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,710
  • Issue: The affected vehicles are equipped with a voltage protection device (VPD), designed to protect the high-voltage battery module, that may activate inadvertently.
  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will remove the VPD switch and install two newly designed battery management systems (BMS) that contain overvoltage protection devices (OPDs), free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 3, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.

Various 2018 Mercedes-Benz Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 99
  • Issue: The affected 2018 Mercedes-AMG C43, C63S AMG, E63 S AMG Sedan, and E63S AMG Wagon vehicles are fitted with AMG performance seats. The backrest rail and backrest fitting may not be properly welded on the driver and front passenger seats.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the welds of the backrest frames, replacing the backrests as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 4, 2018. Owners may contact Mercedes customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2018 Nissan 370Z

  • Number of vehicles affected: 22
  • Issue: The driver's side curtain air bag may have been installed incorrectly during production, possibly affecting its deployment.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the curtain air bag, correcting its installation as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.

2011-2012 Nissan Juke

  • Number of vehicles affected: 49,385
  • Issue: The affected vehicles were previously remedied under recall 12V-069. During that recall remedy, the fuel-pressure sensor may not have been properly tightened, potentially causing the sensor to loosen and leak fuel.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the fuel-pressure sensor to the proper torque free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 7, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
  • NHTSA recall number: 18V156000


2009-2012 Ram 1500

  • Number of vehicles affected: 270,254
  • Issue: The affected trucks were at some time registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, or the District of Columbia. Exposure to environmental conditions such as water mixed with road salt may cause the front fuel tank strap frame "T-Slot" bracket to corrode, possibly causing the fuel tank to drop and make contact with the ground.
  • Remedy: FCA will notify owners, and dealers will bolt a bracket reinforcement to the frame free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 27, 2018. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
  • Manufacturer recall number: U04
  • NHTSA recall number: 18V160000


2018 Ram ProMaster City

  • Number of vehicles affected: 224
  • Issue: The gears within the hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering system may have a casting defect that can cause a crack and a loss of hydraulic steering fluid.
  • Remedy: FCA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the steering gear housing, replacing any affected rack-and-pinion assembly, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 25, 2018. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
  • Manufacturer recall number: U23
  • NHTSA recall number: 18V149000


Various 2007-2014 Volkswagen Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 51,352
  • Issue: Volkswagen is recalling certain 2009-2014 Volkswagen CC, 2010-2014 Golf, 2010-2011 Eos, 2007-2010 Passat Sedan, and 2007-2010 Passat Wagon vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 15, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 69Q9. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 16V-078.
  • NHTSA recall number: 18V148000


2018 Volkswagen Tiguan

  • Number of vehicles affected: 4
  • Issue: The engine support bolts on these vehicles may not have been properly tightened.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace engine support bolts free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in March 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
