New Subaru XV Crosstrek Named a "Top Safety Pick" by IIHS

By Jeff Youngs, October 08, 2012
In the most recent round of crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the new 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek was named a "Top Safety Pick" due to its performance in a battery of crash tests.

To earn a "Top Safety Pick" rating, a model must achieve the highest possible score of "Good" in four different assessments. The moderate overlap frontal-impact crash test concentrates crash force only on the driver's side of the vehicle as the car is smashed into a stationary barrier. The side-impact crash test simulates what happens when a pickup truck or standard SUV crashes into the side of the vehicle. The roof crush strength test is designed to test how well a vehicle will protect occupants in a rollover crash. The rear-impact injury prevention test examines how well the seats and head restraints protect against whiplash in the event the vehicle is struck from behind.

The new Subaru XV Crosstrek, which is based on the Subaru Impreza 5-door hatchback, received the highest possible rating in each assessment.

With prices starting at $22,790, the XV Crosstrek comes standard with a 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter "boxer" 4-cylinder engine, manual transmission, standard all-wheel drive, and a raised suspension.

Premium and Limited trim levels are offered, and the XV Crosstrek rolls out of the showroom for $27,290 in Limited trim with the optional continuously variable transmission, power sunroof, reversing camera, and a navigation system with HD Radio, Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming, and SMS text messaging capability. Subaru dealers can also install a wide variety of extra-cost accessories.
