New 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel to get 42 MPG

New 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel to get 42 MPG

By Jeff Youngs,
The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel debuted at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. This new model is designed to compete with the Volkswagen Jetta Diesel, and Chevrolet says that it will get 42 mpg on the highway. The new 2014 Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel's price tag is $25,695.

Before exploring the details for the new Cruze Diesel, it is worth noting that for $21,685 the existing Cruze Eco model also gets 42 mpg on the highway, which indicates that the real benefit of the more expensive Cruze Diesel is actually horsepower and torque rather than outright fuel economy. The new Cruze Diesel also has more standard equipment than the Cruze Eco, such as leather seats and a free 2-year maintenance plan.

The new 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine installed in the 2014 Cruze Diesel is rated to deliver 148 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, gains of 10 horsepower and 110 lb.-ft. of torque compared to any Cruze equipped with a turbocharged, 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, including the Eco. The figures indicate that among Chevy Cruze models, the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel offers the best acceleration while matching the Cruze Eco for the best highway fuel economy. Chevrolet claims the new Cruze Diesel, which is equipped with a standard automatic transmission, will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds.

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel gets a unique set of 17-inch aluminum wheels and an exterior Aero Performance package designed to smooth air flow around the car and to maximize fuel economy. The powertrain is covered by a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty, and all scheduled maintenance is covered for the first two years of ownership.

Chevrolet says the 2014 Cruze Diesel will go on sale in the summer of 2013.
