IIHS Rates the Redesigned 2013 Ford Escape a Top Safety Pick

IIHS Rates the Redesigned 2013 Ford Escape a Top Safety Pick

By Jeff Youngs, September 10, 2012
In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the redesigned 2013 Ford Escape crossover SUV earned a Top Safety Pick rating.

For 2013, that recognition is bestowed upon models that achieve the top rating of "Good" in four tests: the moderate overlap frontal-impact crash test (formerly known as the offset frontal-impact test), side-impact crash test, rear-impact injury prevention test, and roof crush strength test. The new Escape was not evaluated in the Institute's new small overlap frontal-impact crash test. Beginning in 2014, all models designated a Top Safety Pick will need to also achieve a "Good" rating in this new small overlap crash-test assessment.

Please note that IIHS crash-test scores are valid only when compared to other models in the same weight class.

In terms of safety features, Ford includes 7 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with emergency brake assist, traction control, and a stability control system equipped with Roll Stability Control and Curve Control on every 2013 Ford Escape. The automaker's MyKey programmable safety features and SOS Post Crash Alert system are also standard, along with side mirrors that monitor the Escape's blind spots.

Safety-related options include rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring system, and a cross-traffic alert system.
