Ford Recalls 89,000 Escapes, Fusions with EcoBoost 1.6L Engines

By Jeff Youngs, December 04, 2012
Ford is recalling about 73,000 2013 Ford Escape SUVs and about 16,000 Ford Fusion cars that are equipped with EcoBoost 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engines. The recall affects about 89,000 vehicles in all, of which about 80,000 are in the United States. According to Ford, fluid leaks caused by overheating of these engines present a fire risk.

The recall affects only 2013 Escapes and Fusions that use the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. These vehicles feature the SE and SEL packages.

Ford has not advised owners of these vehicles to stop driving them, only to return them to their dealer to be fixed and to arrange for a loaner vehicle. Ford is working on a solution to the issue that would keep fluids from leaking and coming into contact with the exhaust system. In the meantime, Ford urges drivers of these vehicles to pull off the road, stop safely, turn off the ignition, and leave the vehicle if their dashboard warning lights indicate an overheated engine.

According to Ford, no injuries have resulted from the 13 fires reported in these vehicles: 12 in the Escape and one in a Fusion. However, this is the fourth safety recall for the 2013 Escape, which made its début in the late spring of 2012. Two of the other three recalls also had to do with fire risks involving the 1.6-liter engine.

Owners of vehicles being recalled may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)'s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to
