Ford Drops Fuel-Economy Estimate for 2013 C-Max, Improves MPG for 2014

Ford Motor Company has announced that it is voluntarily changing the way it generates fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 C-Max Hybrid, shifting away from a methodology consistent with EPA General Label rules in order to establish more realistic fuel-economy numbers "that better match performance and improve customer satisfaction."

In establishing the original 47 mpg combined-driving mileage estimate for the 2013 C-Max, Ford used the same data generated by the Ford Fusion Hybrid, a process in full compliance with existing EPA General Label regulations. Moving forward, the company said it will test the C-Max Hybrid separately. As a result, the new fuel-economy rating for the 2013 Ford C-Max is 43 mpg in combined driving, down 4 mpg compared with the original 47-mpg rating.

Reflecting an understanding that perhaps existing C-Max drivers might be unhappy with this fuel-economy restatement, Ford is offering C-Max buyers a goodwill payment of $550, while C-Max lessors will receive $325. Ford says these figures are equivalent to the estimated average fuel cost of the difference between the two labels.

Ford also announced that when the 2014 C-Max Hybrid goes on sale in December, it will get better gas mileage than the 2013 version.

"Ford is absolutely committed to being a leader in the hybrid market and to top fuel efficiency across our lineup," said Raj Nair, group vice president, global product development. "We are taking actions with our popular C-Max Hybrid so that customers are even more satisfied with the vehicle's on-road fuel efficiency performance."

To improve fuel economy for the 2014 C-Max Hybrid, Ford is making slight changes to improve aerodynamics, revising the transmission to provide more efficient operation, and is employing engine oil with reduced friction properties.
