Ford Claims 45 MPG Highway EPA Rating Gives Fiesta Most Fuel-Efficient Status

By Philly Murtha, October 30, 2013
The 2014 Ford Fiesta, which arrives in dealer showrooms later this year, may be the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid, gasoline-powered sub-compact, according to Ford Motor Co. The Fiesta, which is equipped with Ford's new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, achieves a U.S. EPA-certified fuel efficiency rating of 32 mpg in city driving and 45 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 37 mpg.

Ford says the Fiesta's highway fuel economy exceeds highway mpg ratings for the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris. Ford also claims that the Fiesta is the only model in its class with an engine that produces more than 120 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque that achieves 44 mpg in highway driving. In comparsion, Ford says the Volkswagen Golf diesel with a manual transmission achieves 42 mpg on the highway.

The EPA rating is for both the 4- and 5-door 2014 Fiesta models with 5-speed manual transmission. Ford also highlighted the fact that its 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine was named the International Engine of the Year in 2012 and in 2013 by a panel of automotive journalists.

Ford's global EcoBoost engine family now includes the 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine; 1.5-liter, 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines; and the 3.5-liter V6 engine. The automaker has also stated that EcoBoost technology will be offered in nearly 80% of the company's global nameplates by the end of this year.

The Fiesta also features an aerodynmaic design to help save fuel, Ford claims, adding  that cruise control, the SE Manual EcoBoost package with rear spoiler, side air deflectors, underbody shields, lower grille blockers, and low-rolling resistance tires helps achieve better fuel economy.

Through the first nine months of 2013, Fiesta sales were 57,618 units, up from 43,484 unit sales in 2012, according to manufacturer-reported sales numbers tracked by J.D. Power. Year-to-date, the Fiesta ranks as the third-best-selling sub-compact car in the U.S. market.
