BMW Concept X5 eDrive Paves Way to Plug-in Future

By Jeff Youngs, May 01, 2014
Calling it "supremely talented in every way," BMW debuted the Concept X5 eDrive at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. This conceptual version of the company's popular crossover SUV is equipped with BMW's plug-in gas-electric hybrid powertrain and represents the first time the automaker has paired its plug-in technology with its xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The Concept X5 eDrive is equipped with a turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine generating 240 horsepower. A Lithium-ion battery located underneath the cargo area floor powers an electric motor that makes 95 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque the moment the driver steps on the accelerator pedal.

The Concept X5 eDrive is designed to operate solely using the gasoline engine, or using both the gasoline engine and the electric motor working in tandem, or solely using the electric motor and the battery. In EV mode, the Concept X5 eDrive can travel up to 20 miles at speeds up to 75 mph, according to BMW. Because some European cities now have emission-free driving zones in order to cut down on pollution, a Save Battery mode allows the driver to conserve maximum range until the X5 reaches an emission-free driving zone.

BMW says the Concept X5 eDrive's battery recharging system is compatible with household electrical outlets, wall charging units, and public high-speed charging stations, and BMW's available Wallbox Pro home charging station can be connected to the grid or solar panels. A BMW ConnectedDrive smartphone application allows the driver to check vehicle charging status, monitor charging, pre-program charging times, and pre-condition the interior with heat or air conditioning.

A Driving Experience Control switch offers Comfort, Sport, and EcoPro driving modes. In conjunction with the navigation system, the Proactive Driving Assistant factors in the route, terrain, speed limits, and traffic conditions in order to maximize the SUV's efficiency. The driver can also find nearby public charging stations using the navigation system.

To separate the Concept X5 eDrive model from other X5s, it features unique Silverflake paint with BMW i Blue exterior trim accents, exclusive 21-in. aluminum wheels housed within body-color wheel arches, special roof rails, and a glowing charging cable. Inside, this concept vehicle is decked out in Ivory White leather with light blue stitching, Piano Black trim with blue accents, blue ambient lighting, and a blue-illuminated eDrive button.

BMW has not confirmed whether or not a production version of this SUV will be available in the future.
