2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Makes Safest SUVs List

By Jeff Youngs, August 06, 2013
Based on crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the redesigned 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the two safest SUVs people can buy. It joins the 2014 Subaru Forester as the only SUVs to receive the top rating of "Good" in the tough new small overlap frontal-impact crash test conducted by the IIHS.

Designed to measure protection levels when a vehicle impacts a pole, tree, or oncoming traffic on the left front corner of the vehicle, the small overlap test joins the moderate overlap frontal-impact test, side-impact test, roof crush strength test, and the rear-impact injury prevention test in the IIHS assessment program. The 2014 Outlander receives "Good" ratings in all five of these tests, earning it a "Top Safety Pick Plus" rating.

The redesigned Outlander is a 7-passenger crossover with a third-row seat designed for children. It debuts a new design direction to be reflected in future Mitsubishi models, and is available with several new safety technologies, including a knee air bag for the driver, structural design that limits brake pedal intrusion during an accident, forward-collision mitigation system, and a lane-departure warning system.

Like most other Mitsubishi models, the 2014 Outlander includes a 10-year/100,00-mile powertrain warranty. The new SUV is offered in ES, SE, and GT trim levels, with a choice between a 4-cylinder and a V-6 engine. A Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel-drive system is optional, featuring Normal, Eco, Snow, and Lock driving modes.

Notably, Mitsubishi's smaller Outlander Sport model is also named a "Top Safety Pick Plus," having received an "Acceptable" rating in the new small overlap test.
