2014 Infiniti Q50 Earns 5-Star Overall Safety Rating, Misses 5-Star Frontal-Impact Crash Rating from NHTSA

By Jeff Youngs, December 16, 2013
The completely redesigned 2014 Infiniti Q50 luxury sport sedan earns an overall crash-test rating of 5 stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the highest rating possible. However, upon review of all test results that are used to determine that rating, it appears that the new Q50 does not receive 5-star ratings for the driver or for the front passenger in a frontal-impact collision. Rather, the driver protection rating is 4 stars, while the front passenger protection rating is 3 stars.

"We're pleased with NHTSA's recognition of Infiniti's efforts to develop some of the safest cars on the road," said Infiniti Americas Vice President Michael Bartsch, before outlining what he characterized as "world's first" safety technologies such as Active Lane Control and Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW). Active Lane Control keeps the Q50 centered in its lane, while PFCW employs radar that can see two cars ahead and predictively brake the Q50 to provide quicker reaction to sudden traffic slowing and stopping.

The vehicle that the new 2014 Q50 replaces, and which is still on sale, the Infiniti G37 Sedan, had not been crash-tested by the NHTSA since revised procedures and measurements were introduced for the 2011 model year. The G37 Sedan did, however, earn "Good" or "Acceptable" ratings in all assessments performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including the difficult new small overlap frontal-impact test, with the single exception of rear-impact injury prevention for which the car rated "Marginal."

As this post is written, the IIHS has not tested the new 2014 Infiniti Q50's crash protection.
