2013 Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ Named Top Safety Picks

2013 Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ Named Top Safety Picks

By Jeff Youngs, September 10, 2012
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the 2013 Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ Top Safety Picks. The FR-S and BRZ are nearly identical models, sharing engineering, design, and packaging, and excepting a handful of details. The Institute has bestowed its Top Safety Pick crash-test rating upon both versions of the 4-seat, rear-wheel-drive sports car.

To achieve a Top Safety Pick rating for 2013, a model must achieve the top rating of "Good" in each of four different crash tests: moderate overlap frontal test, side-impact test, rear-impact whiplash prevention test, and roof crush strength test.

Beginning for the 2014 model year, a Top Safety Pick rating will only be given to those models that meet these standards, as well as a Good rating in a new small overlap frontal test. Neither the Scion nor the Subaru were subjected to the small overlap frontal test to achieve their 2013 Top Safety Pick rating.

Making a purchase decision between the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ comes down to personal preferences with regard to minor styling details, color preference, and whether the buyer prefers leather seats with Alcantara inserts, heated front seats, and automatic climate control, which are only offered on the Subaru version.

Please note that IIHS crash-test scores are valid only when compared to other models in the same weight class.
