2013 Ford Fusion Launch Heralds 47 mpg for New Hybrid Version

This week, Ford Motor Co. created a haze of hoopla by creating marketing excitement to indelibly impress in consumer minds that its new 2013 Ford Fusion, which has styling cues from the beautiful Aston Martin Vantage (formerly a Ford company brand), can be ordered as a hybrid that achieves a 47 mpg combined travel range, making it what Ford claims is the most fuel-efficient midsize conventional car in the U.S. market.

None other than prime-time TV's "American Idol" impresario Ryan Seacrest announces and stars in a special online promotion that includes an interactive story: "47 Challenges, 47 Days" on the site: Fans can follow a story that is updated daily and includes special marketing events with a chance to win one of three new Fusions. So far, Ford staff claim that the new Random Acts of Fusion site has generated more than 11 million engagements.

The interactive part is that visitors can take photos and upload them on the site.

Some key points about the redesigned 2013 model mentioned by Ford:

  • The Fusion Hybrid achieves a top speed of 62 mph in EV mode, which enables the hybrid sedan to have matching city and highway fuel economy ratings of 47 mpg.
  • Fusion offers one of the broadest selections of fuel-efficient powertrains in the midsize conventional segment.
  • In addition to the hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) alternatives, the EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine, a normally aspirated 4-cylinder, is also available.
  • The new 2013 Fusion is available as a front- or all-wheel-drive (FWD or AWD) model and offers a choice of automatic and manual 6-speed transmissions.
  • The new model will be equipped with the latest safety features, including a lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, and MyFordTouch.

The 2013 Ford Fusion will reach showrooms this fall. Local Detroit media report that Ford officials are heralding and promoting this stylish new Fusion across the country, as it will compete with the two midsize conventional sales leaders: the redesigned Toyota Camry, which is the best-selling car in the country, and a newly redesigned Honda Accord, which is the second-highest-volume model. The segment's third-best-seller is the Nissan Altima--also redesigned for 2013. The midsize car segment is the largest volume segment in the market. Nearly one of every five models purchased in the United States both in 2011 and to date in 2012 was a midsize car. The last time that Ford had the best-selling car was in 1996 with the Taurus.

The current 2012 Fusion is one of the 10 best-selling models in the U.S. market. Through the first 8 months of 2012, Fusion was the ninth-best-selling model and the fourth-best-selling midsize conventional car in the United States, based on total (retail and fleet) sales collected by J.D. Power's Power Information Network(R) (PIN) and strategic partner LMC Automotive. Year-to-date Fusion sales are 181,865 units vs. 168,929 unit sales in 2011. This year, Toyota delivered more than 280,414 Camrys through the first 8 months of the year.
