2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan Earns "Top Safety Pick" Rating

By Jeff Youngs, May 23, 2012
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the 2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan a "Top Safety Pick," based on its top-rated performance in the frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests, the rear-impact injury prevention test, and the roof crush strength test.

The 3 Series Sedan, redesigned for 2012, is available as a 328i or a 335i model in standard, Sport, Modern, or Luxury trim levels. The 328I is fitted with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the 335i has a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine generating more horsepower and torque. Prices start at $35,795, including the destination charge.

Standard safety features on the 3 Series Sedan include 8 air bags, with rear side-impact air bags offered as an option. Traction and stability control are included in the base price, as well as 4-wheel ventilated-disc anti-lock brakes with Dynamic Brake Control, Cornering Brake Control, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Drying, and Brake Stand-by technology. When the brakes are hit hard, the 3 Series' adaptive brake lights flash to alert drivers that the vehicle is stopping rapidly.

Optional safety features for the all-new 3 Series include lane-departure warning, active blind-spot detection, and BMW Assist telematics with a 4-year subscription to the Automatic Collision Notification and Emergency Request services. A reversing camera and a top-view camera are also available at extra cost.
