The Chrysler 200C EV Concept is a range-extended, electric-powered sport sedan that Chrysler says will go into production in 2010. It joins the Chrysler ENVI (short for "Environmental") Group's stable that now includes five environmentally responsible vehicles that rely at least partly on electric power. Based on a shorter version of the Chrysler 300's platform, the smaller 200C EV Concept could be a potential competitor for the BMW 3 Series, according to some reports. The technologically sophisticated, battery-powered car is capable of operating for 40 miles on a lithium-ion battery pack before requiring a recharge by plugging in to a standard household electrical outlet. For longer trips, a small gasoline engine supplies energy to power the electric motors, giving the 200C EV Concept a 400-mile range.

The Chrysler 200C EV Concept provides the benefits of an elegant sport sedan with a range-extended 400-mile driving distance before the need to refuel. The 200 EV Concept has an "inspired and soulful look," according to Chrysler, and is painted in an eco-friendly, water-based Liquid Graphite Pearl exterior color. The windows are tinted in a Warm Bronze, helping to reduce air conditioning loads. They are surrounded in hand-crafted polished aluminum accent trim.
Efficiency is a key element of the Chrysler 200C EV's design, as its aerodynamic front end contributes to the vehicle's extended driving range. The front fascia is a modern interpretation of the winged Chrysler badge, and the grille is distinctive to Chrysler. Headlamps and taillamps are placed on the far corners of the EV Concept to help visually reduce the front and rear overhangs, while the front fog lights and rear backup lights are integrated onto the surrounding fascia and minimized in scale through the use of LED technology.
Inside the Chrysler 200C EV Concept's cabin, Leaf Green LED lighting and stitching accentuate what Chrysler calls an "organic" form. A combination of Pearl, Graphite and Leaf Green colors combine to create a warm and inviting interior, the manufacturer says. Driver and front passenger seats, slim in design with spinal support, are covered in Pearl chromium-free leather and trimmed with Leaf Green stitching, and all four bucket seats can be heated or cooled with individual temperature controls.
The Chrysler 200C EV Concept cabin has flooring inspired by a Zen rock garden with Gentle Graphite waves flowing from the floor, across the sides of the center console, and up onto the doors.
The Chrysler 200C EV Concept's interior is truly modern, according to the manufacturer, free of switches and levers. The dashboard features a touch screen for controlling the sound system and cell phone capabilities. The driver can move images, select infotainment options and customize pictures, backgrounds, mood, volume and lighting by simply touching the screen. Front-seat passengers can access a tablet PC from the glove box and can surf the Internet, scroll through their personal media library, schedule vehicle maintenance, or send directions to the driver. There's also a charging station for personal mobile devices underneath the glove box, activated by simply laying the unit on the charging pad. Rear passengers have access to a similar charging compartment under the cantilevered front-console armrest.
Chrysler's ENVI Group, which is named after the first four letters of "Environmental," is responsible for delivering clean, environmentally responsible, no-compromise electric vehicles and hopes to have as many as 500,000 vehicles on the road by 2013, according to a statement from the company. The Chrysler 200C EV Concept uses the same powertrain components that are shared among all of Chrysler's ENVI Group projects, which include the range-extended Jeep Patriot EV Concept, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV, and Chrysler Town & Country EV, as well as the pure electric Dodge Circuit EV Concept.
The range-extended Chrysler 200C EV Concept is powered by a 200-kilowatt (268 horsepower) engine and lithium-ion battery pack that is recharged partly by energy recovered from regenerative braking. In pure electric mode, the car can travel about 40 miles. Thereafter, the battery pack must be recharged by plugging the vehicle into a standard 110- or 220-volt household outlet, the latter offering a shorter recharge time. For longer trips, a gasoline engine supplies energy to an electric generator, which in turn powers the electric motors that turn the 200C EV Concept's rear wheels. In this mode, the car can go 400 miles before requiring a fill-up.
Chrysler points out that the 200C EV Concept clocks 0-60 mph in 7 seconds and accelerates through the quarter-mile traps in 14 seconds. The top speed for the 200C EV Concept is greater than 120 mph, Chrysler claims.
The Chrysler 200C EV Concept is a high-tech car that includes all the technological wizardry consumers desire. Features include a multi-media touch screen to manage all vehicle functions and a "techno leaf" tablet personal computer for passengers. Occupants also have in-car access to social media software and technology similar to MySpace, Facebook and Twitter to create "buddy vehicles" and which will allow the driver and passengers to keep schedules, music, friends and life activities programmed and in sync from within the car's cabin. There's also a next-generation navigation system that features a link to monitoring traffic on city streets. Real-time weather data also is available and so are enhanced driving recommendations.
