Introduction
Say you want a racecar, but one that’s street-legal. Say you view the stats for the Challenger SRT Hellcat and Camaro ZL1, but all they do is give you a serious case of the blahs. Say you want to claim the highest and fastest.

As the Rolling Stones song goes, please let me introduce myself: The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon.

In creating the Challenger SRT Demon, Dodge incorporates tricks from the shadowy underworld of street racing and makes it legal, with plenty of firsts for a production car. And while it may be law-abiding on our roadways, all of the wizardry got the Demon banned from the NHRA drag strip, as it is too fast to meet their requirements.

Buy a Demon and Dodge will spring for a day with professional instructors and track time at Bondurant racing school in Chandler, AZ, so that you can learn to manage this beast. And in case you’re having trouble convincing your insurance company to cover the Demon, Dodge has named Hagerty the Demon’s official insurance provider.

The Demon will be built in Ontario, Canada, and only 3,000 units are planned for the American market. Dodge says they intend for pricing to stay below the $100,000 threshold.

Exterior Features
The new Challenger Demon features what Dodge claims is the biggest functional air scoop on any production car, and it makes its presence known on the hood.

Wide-body fender flares increase the width of the Challenger by 3.5 ins., making its stance even more menacing and covering the Demon-exclusive, drag-strip-type Nitto tires. They’re 315 mm wide and nearly slick, just barely skirting the legal.

Interior Features
For the singularly purposed, the base Challenger SRT Demon comes only equipped with a driver’s seat covered in cloth to save weight. For $1 more, the front passenger and rear seats can be optioned back in, but will add about 130 lbs. to the curb weight of the car. Other slenderizing features include the removal of a sound system, sound insulators, and carpeting, so if you’re looking for the lightest Demon possible, it will be an uncomfortable, uncompromising commitment.

Optional Features
Those wishing for more refinement at the cost of greater weight can opt for Laguna leather and Alcantara suede upholstery. A 4-point harness bar for track use is a dealer-installed accessory. Other options include a 19-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, sunroof, and heated and ventilated leather front seats.

The Demon Crate is an available package that includes high-octane engine calibration, replacement switch module containing high-octane button, narrower front wheels, conical performance air filter, and specially marked tools and is personalized with the owner’s name, VIN, and serial number.

Under the Hood
The supercharged, 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 installed in the Challenger SRT Demon is capable of producing 840 horsepower and 770 lb.-ft. of torque and its stout, abovementioned abilities make it the fastest production car in the world, according to Dodge.

While it shares its architecture with the V-8 in the Hellcat, most of the Demon’s engine components are all-new, and not simply a super-tuned version. It has greater boost pressure, higher rpm limit, and higher output overall. The power is delivered to the rear wheels through a beefed up 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

It uses street racing tech like TransBrake and Torque Reserve for more oomph at launch. It allows the Demon to pop a wheelie and amuse all of your friends before blowing their doors off.

About the 840 horsepower and the eye-popping acceleration times: they’re only fully available when you get the Demon Crate package and if you can find a specialty dealer that sells 100+ octane. With 91 octane premium, you’ll “only” get 808 peak horsepower.
