2017 Ford Fusion Preview

Ford gives the 2017 Fusion midsize family sedan a minor refresh, making improvements in areas where it was needed, but otherwise leaving well enough alone. The updated Fusion arrives at Ford dealerships in the summer of 2016.
Look closely and you’ll be able to see the minor styling changes made to the 2017 Fusion. Already one of the more attractive models in its segment, Ford is wise to stick with a successful design recipe.
Two new trim levels debut for 2017. The Fusion Platinum is a luxurious car featuring a dark gray grille treatment and polished 19-in. aluminum wheels. The Fusion Sport is, according to Ford, a “performance sedan” identified by a blacked-out mesh grille, larger air intakes, unique 19-in. wheels, and a rear spoiler.
Inside, the new 2017 Fusion retains the buttons and knobs that were added for the stereo and climate controls for 2016, but a new transmission shift dial replaces the previous selector lever. The new Platinum trim level equips the Fusion with premium leather, including for the door panels and steering wheel.
Have trouble parking? The 2017 Ford Fusion is offered with a park-assist system that now works for both parallel and perpendicular spaces. Activate the technology and when it finds an appropriate space it will steer the car for you while you operate the brake pedal and the transmission selector.
Under the Hood
A twin-turbocharged, 2.7-liter, EcoBoost V-6 engine debuts in the new Fusion Sport, paired exclusively with all-wheel drive. Output measures an estimated 325 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque, the engine fortified by an upgraded 6-speed automatic transmission, dual exhaust system with quad outlets, and a continuous damping suspension with a pothole-detection system that can instantly react to reduce how severely the jolt is transmitted to occupants.
The Fusion Hybrid and plug-in Fusion Energi models return for 2017, equipped with new software that Ford expects will improve their refinement levels while enhancing driving engagement. New electric motors also debut, with Ford predicting improved efficiency.
Ford continues to offer a number of safety systems for the Fusion, including a forward-collision warning system. For 2017, it gains new pedestrian-detection capability, but not the automatic emergency braking system that it really needs.
With the 2017 Fusion, Ford finally replaces the MyFord Touch infotainment system with new Sync 3 technology. According to Ford, Sync 3 offers faster response to input, improved graphics, conversational voice recognition, and a Sync Connect smartphone app with remote access to various vehicle functions and features.
