2017 Audi Q2 Preview

Perhaps you haven’t heard, but crossover SUVs are hot. Apparently, this is the kind of vehicle to get. So, car companies like Audi are planning a whole bunch of them in a range of sizes and prices.

Take the new Audi Q2, for example. It goes on sale in Europe in the fall of 2016 and should arrive in America shortly thereafter. It’s smaller than the Audi Q3, sized more like a Mini Countryman or a Kia Soul, and will likely have a price tag below $30,000.

Exterior Features
See anything different about the Audi Q2? It has a slightly different look from other modern Audis and is the first production model penned under the eye of the company’s latest design chief.

Featuring an appealing cheese-grater insert, the Q2’s chrome-ringed grille takes a different approach, its new perimeter shapes echoed in the taillights. Along the sides, it would seem that Nissan and Acura inspired Audi’s designers when they drew the Q2’s upper character line. Oddly, the rear roof pillar is painted silver or black, the latter color working far better than the former, which looks like a panel of duct tape covering a broken window.

Interior Features
Cabin design mimics the A3 and Q3, with simple controls, large round air vents, and a rectangular infotainment display that rises from the top of the dashboard and is controlled using a knob and switchgear on the center console. The driver faces a 12.3-in. Audi Virtual Cockpit display.

Audi promises a broad range of colors, trims, and equipment to allow for a greater range of customization than the company currently offers for its products. For example, owners can color-match the interior trim.

While the Q2 supplies seating for 5 people, 4 will be happier. A maximum of 14.3 cu. ft. of cargo fits behind the rear seat. Fold the standard 60/40 split-folding seat down to access 37.1 cu. ft. of cargo space.

Optional Features
Greater detail regarding standard and optional equipment will be available closer to the Q2’s launch, but you can expect leather upholstery (or leatherette at a minimum), as well as a navigation system, panoramic glass roof, power rear liftgate, and a head-up display. Audi also says that a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system will be available, along with larger wheel-and-tire combinations.

Under the Hood
Based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB modular architecture, from which the Audi A3, Q3, and Volkswagen Golf spring, the Audi Q2 will be available with a choice between two turbocharged 4-cylinder engines.

The entry-level model has a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder that is expected to make about 150 horsepower. The available turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder will make about 190 horsepower as well as a greater amount of torque.

Both engines will be paired with a 7-speed automated manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. A Quattro all-wheel-drive system will be optional, powering the Q2’s front wheels until they slip, and then transferring power to the rear wheels as necessary.

In Europe, a turbodiesel model will be available, and a plug-in hybrid variant is planned.

Every Q2 SUV will be equipped with a low-speed automatic emergency braking system that includes pedestrian-detection capability. Optionally, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability will be available, along with higher-speed automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot warning system, and a lane-departure warning system.

In addition to a navigation system, the Q2’s infotainment system can be fitted with Audi Connect subscription services, including a 4G Wi-Fi connection. The system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone-projection technology.

In spite of its small size, a park-assist system is optional, able to autonomously steer the Q2 into both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces while the driver operates the pedals and transmission.
