The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV designed to hold five people. For the new model year, it receives design, comfort, technology, and safety upgrades, and Mazda claims that fuel economy is also improved. When it goes on sale, the 2016 CX-5 will be sold in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels.

Exterior Features
Mazda has freshened the 2016 CX-5's styling, revising the grille, lighting elements, and 19-in. aluminum wheel designs. New LED headlights and taillights are available, and the CX-5 is offered in two new colors.

Interior Features
Mazda says it has upgraded the 2016 CX-5's interior materials, expanding opportunities to better tailor the cabin to specific preferences. Available interior trim panels include aluminum, satin chrome, or piano black, updated cloth upholstery is standard, and a new Parchment leather color debuts.

Revised seat designs aim to improve comfort levels, and the Touring version gains a manual front passenger's seat-height adjuster. Rear-seat cushions are longer for better thigh support and a more natural seating position, Mazda says.

Additionally, Mazda has expanded the SUV's interior storage space, and most CX-5s come with a Mazda Connect infotainment system with Internet and social media access.

Optional Features
Mazda has announced option packages for each CX-5 trim level. These are offered in addition to several dealer-installed upgrades.

The CX-5 Sport is offered with a Rear Camera package that includes a reversing camera, Mazda Connect infotainment system, and HD Radio. These items are standard for the CX-5 Touring, which can be enhanced with a premium audio system and a power sunroof.

Both the CX-5 Touring and the CX-5 Grand Touring can be fitted with a Technology package. It includes a navigation system, Mazda's Smart Brake Support technology, auto-dimming rearview mirror, programmable garage door opener, and for the Touring trim level, the rain-sensing wipers that come standard on the Grand Touring. CX-5s with this package also receive LED headlights, LED fog lights, LED running lights, LED taillights, and an adaptive front-lighting system.

Exclusively available for the CX-5 Grand Touring, the i-ActiveSense package includes an adaptive cruise control system with forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning system, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Under the Hood
A 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the CX-5 Sport, paired with a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. An automatic transmission is optional.

A 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring. An automatic transmission is standard with this engine, and an updated all-wheel-drive system is optional.

With the larger engine, new Drive Selection technology gives the driver control over different powertrain modes. All 2016 CX-5s have a revised suspension design and tuning for an improved ride, as well as added sound insulation to achieve a claimed 10% reduction in cabin noise at highway speeds. A new electric parking brake is standard for all versions of the 2016 CX-5.

Mazda calls its collection of safety technologies i-ActiveSense. As a part of this new suite of safety features, Mazda adds rear cross-traffic detection to the blind-spot monitoring system, and introduces a dynamic radar cruise control system, lane-departure warning system, and automatic high-beam headlights to the 2016 CX-5. Smart Brake Support technology evolves from a low-speed system to one that works at higher speeds.

For 2016, Mazda offers its Mazda Connect infotainment system in the CX-5. Optional for the Sport trim level and standard for the Touring and Grand Touring versions, Mazda Connect provides access to the Internet and social media platforms, according to the automaker.
