2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport Preview

The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport is the entry-level SUV in the automaker's lineup, replacing the LR2. Designed to provide seating for up to 7 people, the new Discovery Sport is offered in SE, HSE, and HSE Lux trim levels. The Discovery Sport competes against the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, Infiniti QX50, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, and Volvo XC60.
Land Rover says the Discovery Sport's exterior design previews the overall look of a new family of Discovery-branded models. Similar to the Range Rover lineup, Discovery models will wear their family name in large block letters on the hood and tailgate.
The 2015 Discovery Sport includes rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, front and rear recovery hooks, and rear park-assist sensors as standard equipment.
Equipped with 5+2 seating, the new Discovery Sport features a stadium-style second-row seat design that slides forward and back with 6.3 in. of travel; it also reclines for greater comfort.
Standard equipment includes partial leather seats, 2-zone climate control system, and an 8-in. color infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and InControl Apps technology that includes a navigation app. The Discovery Sport supplies 19.1 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the third-row seat; 32.7 cu. ft. behind the second-row seat; and 66.9 cu. ft. with all seats folded.
Upgrade to the Discovery Sport HSE for xenon headlights with LED running lights, front and rear fog lights, front park-assist sensors, and a power rear liftgate. Inside, full leather seats are installed beneath a panoramic sunroof, and a passive entry system provides access to the cabin.
Choose the Discovery Sport HSE Lux for premium leather upholstery, premium sound system, premium floor mats, and interior mood lighting. This version also includes several safety technologies, along with a more robust SD-card navigation system, satellite radio, and HD Radio.
All three versions of the SUV can be optioned with a Climate Comfort package (heated front and rear seats, heated windshield, heated steering wheel) and a Black Design package (black 19- or 20-in. wheels, black letter badges, black contrast roof color, black mirrors). The Discovery Sport SE is available with a Convenience package (power tailgate, passive entry, auto-dimming rearview mirror with universal garage door opener), while the Discovery Sport HSE can be optioned with a premium sound system including satellite and HD Radio, as well as a Driver Assist Plus package (autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, traffic sign recognition, SD-card navigation).
Under the Hood
A turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the new 2015 Discovery Sport, generating 240 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter starting at just 1,750 rpm. A 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters powers all four of the Discovery Sport's wheels, and Land Rover says it takes 7.8 seconds for this SUV to accelerate to 60 mph. The SUV's first scheduled maintenance visit is free.
The standard 4-wheel-drive system includes Efficient Driveline and hill-descent control systems, as well as Terrain Response technology with Grass, Gravel and Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand, Eco, and Dynamic drivetrain settings.
Land Rover ensures that the Discovery Sport is ready for off-roading thanks to a long-travel suspension providing 8.3 in. of ground clearance at the front axle and 11.5 in. at the rear axle. The new Discovery Sport boasts a 25-degree approach angle, 21-degree breakover angle, and a 35-degree departure angle, and can wade through water 23.6 in. deep. A free off-roading lesson is included with the purchase of a Discovery Sport.
Additional features include new Torque Vectoring by Braking technology, as well as Adaptive Dynamics with MagneRide suspension technology.
Every 2015 Discovery Sport is equipped with a Pedestrian Protection System that includes a pedestrian air bag designed to reduce injury in the event the SUV collides with a person. Additionally, a reversing camera is standard and the hazard lights automatically illuminate under heavy braking.
The HSE adds automatic high-beam assist and front park-assist sensors, while the HSE Lux is equipped with autonomous emergency braking. At speeds below 31 mph this technology can help avoid a collision, and when traveling at 49 mph or less the system can mitigate the severity of a collision, Land Rover says. Additional standard safety features for the HSE Lux version include lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring with Closing Vehicle Sensing and Reverse Traffic Detection.
Land Rover equips each 2015 Discovery Sport with an 8-in. color touch-screen infotainment system including InControl Apps technology, and provides USB charging ports in all three rows of seats. Options include a head-up display, surround camera system, and an Advanced Park Assist with Perpendicular Park system that can steer the SUV into a parking space while the driver operates the transmission and pedals.
