By Jeff Youngs, May 22, 2014
Fast Facts:
  • Available, all-new 600+-horsepower V-8 Hellcat engine
  • Standard V-8 engine now produces 485 horsepower

  • Largest brakes ever offered by Chrysler Group
  • All-new driver-focused cockpit
  • Forged aluminum wheels with all-new Pirelli tire technology

One of the most identifiable American muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger SRT is now more muscular than ever. As an alternative to the standard 392 Hemi V-8 engine, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT will offer a 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 engine, dubbed the Hellcat, that provides more than 600 horsepower, according to Chrysler Group. With the Hellcat engine comes the largest front-brake package ever offered as standard equipment on a Chrysler Group vehicle.

Exterior Features
The 2015 Challenger SRT also features a new fascia design and an all-new vertical-split grille that provides what Chrysler characterizes as a "menacing update" to its 1971 inspiration. A larger, power-bulge aluminum hood features a dedicated cold-air intake. The design includes integrated projector fog lamps that are moved to the lower corners to help accentuate the car's width. A new duck-bill fascia splitter helps improve the vehicle's aerodynamics; models with a Hellcat engine feature a larger front splitter designed for optimal downforce to minimize lift, Chrysler says.

Eleven exterior colors are available, including B5 Blue Pearl Coat, Billet Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Bright White Clear Coat, Granite Crystal Metallic Pearl Coat, Ivory White Tri-Coat Pearl, Jazz Blue Pearl Coat, Phantom Black Tri-Coat Pearl, Pitch Black Clear Coat, Redline Tri-Coat Pearl, Sublime Metallic Pearl Coat, and TorRed Clear Coat. Twin, full-body stripes are available in Black Satin Gloss and Silver High Gloss on the SRT 392. The hood is standard in body color, and available in a contrasting Black Satin finish.

Interior Features
The interior of the 2015 Challenger SRT includes an all-new instrument panel with a stamped aluminum bezel, driver-selectable display screen, analog speedometer and tachometer gauges, and a new standard 8.4-in. Uconnect touch screen. The heated and ventilated front seats have been redesigned with improved cushioning and more comfortable contours. Also available are performance seats with large side bolsters for maximum lateral support in hard cornering. The seats can be covered in Nappa leather/Alcantara material with embroidered SRT logos. Laguna premium leather, colored either sepia or black with embossed SRT logos, is available as part of an equipment package.

Optional Features
Exterior options include a choice of tires and wheel designs. Various option packages address the sound system, interior and exterior appearance features, and vehicle performance. Many features that are optional with the standard engine are added with the Hellcat engine.

Under the Hood
Chrysler Group has not yet provided exact specifications for the new Hellcat engine, but promises more than 600 horsepower. The standard engine now delivers 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque, an upgrade from last year's model, which offered 470 and 470, respectively. Both the standard and the new Hellcat engine come with an upgraded 6-speed manual transmission or an available TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission.

Standard safety features on the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT include multi-stage front air bags, all-speed traction control, hill-start assist, and available rear park assist and remote start. The Hellcat engine comes with two key fobs--red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full horsepower and torque potential; the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output. With either engine, a PIN code-activated Valet Mode will remap the engine to significantly reduce horsepower and torque and disable certain functions.

As this preview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had rated the crashworthiness of the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT.

The Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine features new Pirelli tire technology with class-exclusive standard Y-Plus rated 4-season tires to help handle extreme loads. The engine features a forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hardened bearing surfaces. Chrysler says the crank can withstand firing pressures equivalent to five family sedans standing on each piston, every two revolutions. Drive Modes include Sport, for increased vehicle performance capability; Track, for maximum performance capability on smooth, dry surfaces; and Custom, which lets drivers set the drive experience to their exact specifications.
