While the 2014 Porsche Cayman is redesigned, it remains a 2-seat, mid-engine sports car based on the Porsche Boxster, but is equipped with a fixed roof. When it goes on sale in the spring of 2013, it will be offered as the standard Cayman and the more powerful Cayman S models.
The 2014 Cayman is equipped with standard staggered-width 18-inch aluminum wheels, LED running lights, and LED taillights. The 2014 Cayman S has 19-inch aluminum wheels, twin exhaust outlets, bi-xenon headlights, and larger front brakes with red-painted brake calipers.
The new Cayman is equipped with dual trunks. The front trunk holds 5.3 cubic feet of luggage, while the rear trunk holds up to 9.7 cubic feet of cargo.
The redesigned 2014 Cayman is equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, partial leather sport seats, and a 4.6-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display screen in the gauge cluster. Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is also standard, including a 7-inch in-dash touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, CD/DVD player, hard-drive music server, USB/iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack.
Trim changes for the Cayman S include leather on the door armrests and the center armrest, and aluminum-color dial faces.
Both models include a Sport button that improves powertrain response and dynamics, and deactivates the fuel-conserving automatic stop/start and coasting features.
Buyers can custom tailor a 2014 Cayman through a wide variety of paint and interior colors. Additionally, extra-cost features include leather seats, navigation system, voice control system, Sound Package Plus with HD Radio and satellite radio, Bose Surround Sound premium audio system, and a Burmeister high-fidelity audio system. Power-adjustable sport seats, Adaptive Sport Seats Plus, heated and ventilated seats, and a power steering column are also optional, along with a choice between a multi-function steering wheel and a SportDesign steering wheel.
The new Cayman can also be upgraded with dual-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting, Porsche Entry & Drive passive entry and ignition, front and rear park-assist sensors, adaptive cruise control system with Porsche Active Safe technology, 20-inch aluminum wheels, European delivery, and more.
Mechanical and performance options include a sport exhaust system, Power Steering Plus, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB), and a Porsche Dynamic Light System (swivels headlights to help see around dark corners, automatically adjusts between low and high beams, automatically adjusts based on driving conditions).
The optional Sport Chrono package adds Launch Control (with PDK), dynamic transmission mounts, and a Sport Plus button that quickens the electric steering, modifies the trigger point for the traction and stability control system, adjusts the optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system to a stiffer setting, and for models with PDK, adds a "motorsport-derived gearshift strategy."
Under the Hood
The 2014 Cayman is equipped with a direct-injection, 2.7-liter, horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine, which is commonly referred to as a "flat-six" or a "boxer" type of engine. It generates 275 horsepower at 7,400 rpm and 213 lb.-ft. of torque between 4,500 and 6,500 rpm.
When equipped with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, the Cayman accelerates to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 165 mph, according to Porsche. With the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) 7-speed automated manual transmission, which includes paddle shifters, the Cayman scoots to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and tops out at 164 mph. Add the optional Sport Chrono package, which includes Launch Control, and the run to 60 mph drops to 5.1 seconds with the PDK, Porsche says.
For greater power and performance, the Cayman S is equipped with a direct-injection 3.4-liter "flat-six" generating 325 horsepower at 7,400 rpm and 273 lb.-ft. of torque between 4,500 and 5,800 rpm. With the manual gearbox, 60 mph arrives in 4.7 seconds, and with PDK, the Cayman S is traveling a mile per minute in 4.6 seconds. The Sport Chrono package option drops that figure to 4.4 seconds. Top speed with the manual transmission is 175 mph.
Both versions of the Cayman are equipped with automatic stop/start technology, which shuts the engine off when the car is idling. With the manual transmission, the driver must actively engage the system. With PDK, it works automatically. If the driver selects Sport mode, the feature is deactivated.
Additionally, models with PDK offer a new "coasting" mode, which decouples the engine from the transmission to eliminate deceleration due to engine braking.
Porsche is projecting fuel economy ratings ranging from 20 mpg in the city for the Cayman S with PDK to 32 mpg on the highway for the standard Cayman with PDK.
The 2014 Porsche Cayman is equipped with standard 4-wheel ventilated and cross-drilled disc brakes, brake assist, brake pre-charging, and a hill-hold function. Eight air bags are standard, including knee air bags, and the Cayman is equipped with Porsche Stability Management (PSM).
Safety-related options include front and rear park-assist sensors and an adaptive cruise control system with Porsche Active Safe. The new Porsche Active Safe feature warns the driver when the Cayman is closing too rapidly on objects ahead, pre-charges the braking system, and can even initiate braking if the driver fails to respond.
