The 2014 Ford Fiesta is a subcompact 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback. The car receives a mid-cycle refresh for 2014, with new styling, a new engine option, and new technology. It is also offered as a performance-oriented Fiesta ST (Sport Technologies) variant for the first time.
New front styling and a grille similar to that of the larger Fusion midsize sedan identify the updated and upgraded 2014 Ford Fiesta. Additionally, Ford's smallest car is offered in new colors and with new optional body graphics. Wheel choices are also restyled.
The new 2014 Fiesta ST takes its design cues from the 2013 Focus ST, adding a restyled grille with a black mesh insert and an offset "ST" badge, fog lights, new front and rear bumpers, rear diffuser panel, dual exhaust outlets, high-mount spoiler, and unique 17-inch aluminum wheels. Molten Orange paint is an exclusive option for the Fiesta ST.
Ford says the Fiesta's dashboard was inspired by cell phone design. For 2014, the Fiesta is offered with several new technologies and in a new performance-oriented trim level that includes metallic interior trim and sport-bolstered front seats with contrast-color inserts.
Ford is offering its MyKey technology for the 2014 Fiesta, which is designed to "encourage safer driving and limit teenagers' exposure to risk while behind the wheel." MyKey allows owners to program maximum vehicle speed and audio volume limits, mute the stereo speakers until the seat belts are fastened, and to ensure that safety features such as stability control cannot be switched off.
Additional options include leather interior trim and ambient cabin lighting. Ford has also announced that a new Sony premium sound system with satellite radio and HD Radio will be optional for the new Fiesta, along with MyFord Touch technology (see last section for details).
Under the Hood
For 2014, the Ford Fiesta's standard engine continues to be a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder generating 120 horsepower and 112 lb.-ft. of torque.
For 2014, a new turbocharged, 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine that provides 123 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque is optional. Ford claims that the Fiesta with the EcoBoost engine "is projected to be the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid subcompact in America," and expects the engine to return more than 40 mpg on the highway.
The new 2014 Fiesta ST is equipped with a turbocharged, 1.6-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder that will deliver a projected 197 horsepower and 214 lb.-ft. of torque, more than a Mini Cooper S. "This is a rewarding car to rev," says Mark Roberts, Fiesta calibration supervisor. "With 177 lb.-ft. of torque available from just 1,600 rpm and 214 lb.-ft. by 3,500 rpm, Fiesta ST gives the performance and feel of an engine twice its size. There's no waiting at all for the power to just push you back in your seat."
Offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox, Fiesta ST fuel economy is expected to reach 34 mpg on the highway. The Fiesta ST also includes torque vectoring control, sport suspension lowered by 15mm, improved braking system, quicker steering, and a 3-mode stability control system.
In addition to Ford's AdvanceTrac traction and stability control system, the 2014 Fiesta is equipped with 7 air bags, including one for the driver's knees. A tire-pressure-monitoring system is also standard, as well as 4-wheel anti-lock brakes.
"It has always been the belief at Ford that entry-level drivers deserve the best technology," says John Schneider, Ford chief engineer, Upperbody Electronics. "This car was built for the digital generation. With Bluetooth connectivity and MP3 capabilities, tech-savvy people who use social media to be constantly connected with the world around them won't be slowed down when they get in this car."
As evidence, Ford is offering MyFord Touch technology on the Fiesta for the first time. MyFord Touch is an infotainment, navigation and smartphone-pairing system operated via voice commands or a 6.5-inch color touch screen. In the Fiesta, the screen is mounted atop the car's dashboard.
