2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe Preview

The 2014 BMW 2 Series hearkens back to the original BMW 2002. Like that classic BMW, the new 2014 2 Series is a 2-door coupe with rear-wheel drive, replacing the 1 Series Coupe in the automaker's lineup. When it goes on sale in March of 2014, it will be available as the BMW 228i and the BMW M235i, the latter the first of a new M Performance line of BMWs to be offered in the United States.
Longer, wider, and lower than the 1 Series Coupe that it replaces, the new 2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe features improved aerodynamics, a 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, lower center of gravity, and a wider track, according to BMW. The German luxury automaker plans to offer the car in two non-metallic and 10 metallic colors, plus a hue named Estoril Blue made exclusively available with the optional M Sport package.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupe has a larger interior than the outgoing 1 Series Coupe, with more front head room and greater rear leg room. The trunk is bigger, too, now measuring 13.8 cu. ft. Standard equipment includes Sensatec upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and iDrive technology with a 6.5-inch flat-screen display, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, and a Driving Experience Control switch.
Leather, premium audio components with Bluetooth music streaming capability, a navigation system with an 8.8-inch display and Touch Controller technology, and BMW Apps with Facebook and Twitter access are options for the 2014 2 Series. This model can also be fitted with adaptive xenon headlights with LED running lights, a High Beam Assistant system, front and rear park-assist sensors, Parking Assistant system, reversing camera, active cruise control system, and more.
Buyers seeking an upgraded appearance can outfit the 2014 BMW 2 Series with a Sport Line package that adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, ambient interior lighting, unique upholstery, brushed aluminum or wood interior trim, and high-gloss black exterior trim.
For maximum handling capability, the M Sport package adds a sport suspension with lowered ride height and 18-inch M double-spoke light alloy wheels. The M Sport package further differentiates the 2 Series with revised exterior styling, doorsill trim plates, sport-bolstered front seats, an M multi-function steering wheel, BMW Individual headliner, unique aluminum interior trim and instrumentation, and an Estoril Blue accent strip. Additionally, a number of M Performance upgrades are available to improve the braking system, suspension, and drivetrain. A set of 19-inch M Performance forged light-alloy wheels is also optional.
Under the Hood
The 2014 BMW 228i is equipped with a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. A 322-horsepower, 3.0-liter, turbocharged 6-cylinder engine is standard in the BMW M235i. The performance-oriented M235i is further fortified with M-specific chassis, suspension, and braking components, along with variable sport steering, a revised exhaust system, and summer performance tires.
Both engines benefit from broad torque curves and an automatic start/stop system, and come standard with an 8-speed Sport automatic transmission that feeds power to the rear wheels. A 6-speed manual gearbox is optional, but, according to BMW, this traditional transmission produces slower acceleration and is less fuel-efficient.
In part, that's because the standard automatic comes with a new "coasting" function which, when the car is driven in Eco Pro mode, disengages the powertrain when the driver releases the gas pedal at speeds between 30 and 100 mph. Eco Pro mode is available through the standard Driving Experience Control switch, which also offers Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ driving modes.
Choose Sport+ and activate the standard Launch Control system and the BMW 228i accelerates to 60 mph in a claimed 5.4 seconds while returning a manufacturer-estimated 27 mpg in combined driving. The more powerful BMW M235i scoots to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, according to BMW, while returning an estimated 25 mpg in combined driving. These figures are for vehicles with the standard 8-speed Sport automatic transmission, which includes paddle shifters.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupe is equipped with 8 standard air bags, a tire-pressure monitoring system that measures pressure for each individual tire, and a standard 10-year subscription to BMW Assist eCall with enhanced automatic collision notification. An active hood system is designed to better protect pedestrians and cyclists from injury by automatically raising the rear part of the hood to provide greater hood deformation capacity.
Options include a reversing camera, adaptive headlights, front and rear park-assist sensors, a lane-departure warning system, and a collision warning system.
In conjunction with the optional navigation system, an available Active Driving Assistant aims to help the 2 Series Coupe driver to improve fuel economy. Operational when the car is driven in Eco Pro mode, the Active Driving Assistant informs the driver of the optimum time to release the accelerator pedal ahead of corners, intersections, and areas where the speed limit drops.
BMW's optional navigation system includes a Touch Controller system that allows the operator to input characters on a touch-sensitive pad, while optional ConnectedDrive Services fully integrates smartphones and provides the 2 Series with Internet access.
