2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel Preview

For 2013, Porsche is adding a new diesel model to its range of Cayenne SUVs. Slotting into the lineup between the standard Cayenne V-6 and the Cayenne S, the new Cayenne Diesel goes on sale in September of 2012 for $56,725, including a $975 destination charge.
From the outside, "Diesel" badges on both front fenders distinguish the new 2013 Cayenne Diesel from other Cayenne models. Pop the fuel-filler door, and in addition to a warning label indicating that only diesel fuel should be used, the Cayenne Diesel is equipped with a special filler neck that is designed to accept diesel-fuel pump nozzles only. This helps to prevent accidental filling with unleaded gas, which is harmful to the vehicle's fuel system and engine.
Like all 2013 Porsche Cayenne models, the Cayenne Diesel is equipped with a new standard analog clock for the dashboard. The 2013 Cayenne lineup also benefits from the addition of central lock buttons mounted to the interior door handles.
Porsche offers a wide variety of optional features for the 2013 Cayenne Diesel. Highlights include a ceramic braking system, Burmeister premium surround sound audio system, panoramic glass sunroof, navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system, and Porsche Communications Management technology.
Starting with 2013 models, buyers can also treat themselves to a European delivery program. New owners can accept the keys to their Cayenne at the Leipzig, Germany assembly plant where the SUV is built, or at the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen.
Under the Hood
The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel is equipped with a 3.0-liter, turbo-diesel 6-cylinder engine fed by a high-pressure, common-rail fuel-injection system. The engine makes 240 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft of torque, the latter available from a low 1,750 rpm.
An 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission is standard, delivering power to the pavement through a permanent 4-wheel-drive system that sends 60 percent of motive force to the rear wheels. Unlike other Cayennes with this transmission, the new diesel model does not include Auto Start-Stop technology. Acceleration to 60 mph takes 7.2 seconds, according to Porsche, and the company says that the Cayenne Diesel will achieve a top speed of 135 mph.
To scrub the Cayenne Diesel's exhaust of NOx (nitrides of oxygen) emissions, the SUV is equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction technology that employs AdBlue fluid to help it meet Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards.
The EPA has not provided final fuel-economy estimates for the new Cayenne Diesel, but Porsche expects the SUV to get 20 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg in combined driving. According to Porsche, this gives the Cayenne Diesel a theoretical 740-mile range.
The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel is equipped with numerous standard safety features, and offers the following items as an option: rearview camera, active bi-Xenon headlights, and Lane Change Assist technology.
