2013 Ford E-Series Van Preview

Introduction
The Ford E-Series Van and E-Series Wagon are full-size cargo and people haulers. They're sold in E-150, E-250 and E-350 series models, with a standard- or extended-length body, and maximum seating capacity is 15 when the extended-length model is configured for passenger use. The E-Series Van is usually configured for commercial or recreational use, and is a popular fleet vehicle. The E-Series was introduced in 1961, and the van version was long known as the Econoline. It has its own platform, closely related to the F-Series pickup platform, and features a sturdy double-wall design. The E-Series is due to be replaced soon by the all-new Ford Transit. Ford's E-Series Van competes with the Nissan NV, Chevrolet Express Cargo, GMC Savana, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Exterior Features
The 2013 Ford E-Series Van is available in seven exterior colors and three models, each with a single trim. The E-250 and E-350 are offered in 212-inch or 232-inch configurations. Standard are 16-inch steel wheels and a limited-slip differential.

Interior Features
Standard interior features include vinyl front bucket seats and floor coverings, 2-speaker AM/FM radio, manually adjustable mirrors and steering wheel, and air conditioning. Maximum cargo volume with the front passenger seat removed is 278.6 cubic feet for the regular-length van, and 319.1 cubic feet for the extended length.

Optional Features
The E-Series Van offers many optional configurations tailored to specific uses. These come in the form of packages. The Ambulance Prep package includes a 3.73 non-limited-slip axle (limited-slip is optional), extra-heavy-duty 225-amp alternator, dual 78-amp heavy-duty auxiliary batteries, auxiliary fuel port, modified vehicle wiring system and kit, auxiliary heater/air conditioning connector package, and a rear floor pan extension. The Crew Van package features a vinyl 3-passenger second-row bench seat and a metal mesh bulkhead. The RV Plus package includes Sync, upgraded sound system, auxiliary heater/AC connector package with rear controls, leather-wrapped steering wheel, swing-out side/fixed rear-door glass, back door-lock switch, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with microphone, aluminum wheels with center hubcap (for the E-150), or 16-inch sport wheel covers over steel wheels (for the E-250). Several different Racks & Bins packages are available and are suited to various purposes. For example, one package is aimed at the electrical contractor or appliance repairman; another adds versatile shelving systems; a third adds a roof rack with ladder storage. Custom wiring is available. Exterior appearance packages are also available, and individual exterior options include alloy wheels, running boards, chrome trim, power-adjustable accessories, sliding side doors, a premium towing package, all-around windows, privacy glass, and keyless entry. Interior options include an AC outlet, cloth upholstery, second-row bench seating, captain's chairs, cruise control, interior insulation, upgraded sound system, cargo protection system, navigation device, and the Ford Sync interface.

Under the Hood
The Ford E-Series lineup offers three different engines, all with rear-wheel drive. The standard model features a 4.6-liter V-8 engine rated at 225 horsepower and 286 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Available on the E-150 and E-250 and standard on the E-350 is a 5.4-liter V-8 rated at 255 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. Available on the E-350 is a 6.8-liter V-10 engine rated at 305 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The V-10 drivetrain, with proper equipment, can tow up to 10,000 pounds.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Ford E-Series van are:

  • E-150 with 4.6-liter V-8 engine: 13/17/15 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • E-350 with 5.4-liter V-8 engine: 12/16/13 mpg
  • E-350 with V-10 engine: 10/14/12 mpg

Safety
Standard safety features of note on the 2013 Ford E-Series van include anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, optional rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

Technology
Ford brings its mechanical, electrical, and electronic know-how to bear on several vocation-specific upgrades for painters, builders, electrical/appliance contractors, plumbers, emergency medical teams, athletic managers, musicians, and travelers. Sync technology includes voice-controlled phone capability, automatic phone book download, photo transfer, voice-activated music search and radio tuning, an integrated navigation system, turn-by-turn directions, voice access to business listings, audible text messages, and much more.
