Introduction
First introduced for the 2007 model year, the Ford Edge is a midsize crossover SUV designed to compete against the Nissan Murano and Toyota Highlander. The Edge shares its platform and powertrain with the Lincoln MKX, as well as the Mazda CX-9, Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ. The Edge is the second-smallest SUV in Ford's lineup-only the Escape is smaller. The Ford Flex and Ford Explorer are both larger.

Originally debuting at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2006, the first-generation Ford Flex was offered with only one powerplant choice, a 3.5-liter engine, and a choice between front- and all-wheel drive. The Edge Sport model arrived in 2009, with colored body trim and standard 20-inch wheels.

Introduced at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, the 2011 Ford Edge receives a significant refresh including new exterior styling, new dashboard, new infotainment options and several new wheel options. The 2011 model is expected to arrive in showrooms in summer 2010.

New for 2011-and intended to lower noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) across all models-Ford made improvements to the sound deadening material by upgrading it to absorb more high-frequency noise, making conversation within the cabin easier. The headliner, with the microphone for hands-free use, is also now closer to the driver for improved voice recognition, Ford says. The windshield is thicker and manufactured from acoustic-laminated glass. Even the front and rear fascias have been subtly tweaked to lower wind resistance and noise, the automaker claims.

Model Lineup
Ford will offer its 2011 Edge in four trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited and Sport. The SE models are fitted with standard cloth upholstery, single-zone manual air conditioning, AM/FM radio with single-disc CD, and 17-inch painted alloy wheels. The Edge SEL models add a 6-way power driver's seat, premium audio, leather-wrapped steering wheel and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Edge Limited adds the option of leather upholstery, 6-way power passenger seat, folding second-row seats, dual-zone climate control, Sync in-car connectivity, and 18-inch chrome-clad alloy wheels. The Edge Sport is fitted with a standard 3.7-liter V-6 engine and polished 22-inch wheels-a class exclusive, says Ford. The equipment level on the Sport builds on the SEL, as it adds a specially-tuned suspension, paddle shift transmission and unique styling both inside and out.

Hardware
The standard engine for the 2011 Ford Edge is a 3.5-liter V-6 producing 285 horsepower and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. New for 2011 is the 3.7-liter V-6, standard on the Edge Sport, rated at 305 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines use advanced engine valvetrain technology (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing, or Ti-VCT) to improve efficiency and performance, Ford says. Making its debut on the Ford Edge is an all-new, turbocharged, 2.0-liter, EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine promising even greater efficiency (Ford has not released horsepower or torque ratings as of press time). All three engines are mated to a new 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission (the Edge Sport receives standard steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters).

The suspension on all Ford Edge models-independent MacPherson struts up front and an independent multi-link in the rear-has been re-tuned for 2011. The shocks, springs and stabilizer bars were adjusted to tighten handling without compromising vehicle ride, according to Ford. The 4-wheel disc braking system has also been improved through the use of larger rear rotors, upgraded brake pads and a revised brake booster.

2011 Ford EdgeSafety
Standard safety features on the 2011 Ford Edge include six air bags with side curtains that include rollover protection (Ford's "Safety Canopy" system), stability and traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Ford's SOS Post-Crash Alert System, designed to continuously flash the hazard lights and sound the horn in the event of an accident, is standard on all trim levels. Blind Spot Mirrors, with small convex mirrors set inside the larger mirror for a wider field of view, are also standard. The Edge SEL is available with a reverse sensing system to help detect objects that are behind the vehicle but cannot be seen while backing up.

Technology
According to Ford, the 2011 Edge offers class-leading technology. Included as standard equipment on the Edge Limited and Edge Sport is the industry-first MyFord Touch driver connect system. It is designed to replace traditional vehicle buttons, knobs and gauges with easy-to-read LCD displays and finger-activated controls similar to those that are commonplace on mobile phones. The centerpiece of MyFord Touch is an 8-inch screen located high in the center console. In addition, there are twin 4.2-inch color screens on each side of the speedometer on the dashboard instrumentation-controlled by switches on the spokes of the redesigned steering wheel. The MyFord Touch system allows the driver to control everything from radio volume to the color of the cabin lighting; it may even be programmed to welcome the driver by name when they enter the vehicle!

Ford's MyKey technology is designed to allow parents to keep close reigns on their teenage drivers. The standard feature assigns limited vehicle top speed and audio volumes based on specific vehicle keys-while the keys assigned to the parents allow full vehicle operations.
