Introduction
The Lexus GX 470 was launched in late 2002 as an all-new 2003 model. The midsized luxury SUV joined the Lexus lineup as the smaller sibling to the Lexus LX 470. In contrast to the Toyota Camry-based Lexus RX 300 crossover, the GX 470 shared a body-on-frame platform and heavy-duty off-road mechanicals with the Toyota 4Runner. Its underpinnings included a 270-hp, 4.7-liter V-8 engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission and a permanent 4WD drivetrain. The GX 470 offered seating for up to 8 passengers within its luxuriously appointed cabin. Its long list of standard features, including an Adaptive Variable Suspension, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and privacy glass, set it apart from its Toyota twin.

The second-generation model, introduced as the Lexus GX 460, debuted in the fall of 2009. The new 4.6-liter engine has been downsized, but it is more efficient and powerful and is now mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Like its predecessor, the body-on-frame chassis is shared with the Toyota 4Runner and the Lexus continues to offer a much more substantial list of standard equipment and luxury features.

2010 Lexus GX 460Model Lineup
Completely redesigned for 2010, the Lexus GX 460 is sold as a single model. However, Lexus offers several option packages as factory options. All GX 460 models share the same 4.6-liter engine and permanent 4WD powertrain. Standard features include 10-way power-adjustable heated/ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, steering wheel audio controls, power moonroof, and a 9-speaker audio system with integrated iPod control and Bluetooth phone connectivity. All models feature a 4.2-inch multi-information display which displays the image from the standard back-up camera.

The second row is designed with a 60/40-split seatback for walk-in access to the third-row seating area. The standard third row features fold-flat seatbacks, and the rear cargo area is accessed via a side-hinged rear door. New for 2010, the rear door window is fitted with a flip-up glass panel for added convenience.

Options for the Lexus GX 460 are mainly bundled into packages. A Convenience package includes electrochromatic exterior mirrors (auto-dimming), and Intuitive Parking Assist. The Comfort Plus package includes semi-aniline leather, heated second-row seats, wood-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob, and 3-zone climate control. A next-generation HDD-based navigation system is a stand-alone option, as is the 17-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Audio system. New for the GX is the optional Wide-view Front and Side Monitor, designed to enhance visibility in tight spaces during low-speed maneuvers, according to Lexus. An available rear-seat entertainment system now includes two LCD screens, one in each front-seat backrest.

Hardware
The 2010 Lexus GX 460 features an all-new, aluminum 4.6-liter V-8 engine. The 32-valve DOHC engine features Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) to optimize power and improve emissions and fuel efficiency, Lexus says. With a power rating of 301 horsepower and a torque rating of 329 lb.-ft., the engine is more powerful and more fuel efficient than its predecessor with an EPA fuel-economy rating of 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. The standard transmission is an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic. All GX 460 models feature standard full-time 4WD with an electronically controlled transfer case and Torsen torque-sensing rear differential. The GX 460 is rated to tow 6500 pounds.

Standard on all GX 460 models is the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). Electronics monitor steering angle and vehicle yaw to automatically adjust the vehicle's roll resistance. The automaker says KDSS has the ability to reduce roll angle by as much as 50 percent. In addition, the suspension is available with a 3-mode (Normal, Sport and Comfort) Adaptive Variable Suspension system designed to deliver a smooth on-road ride without compromising off-road capabilities, says Lexus. New for 2010, the standard wheel package has been upgraded from 17-inch alloy wheels to 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/60R18 tires.

Like all Lexus models, the 2010 GX 460 is equipped with a long list of standard safety features. Stability control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and anti-lock brakes are standard. In addition, the supplemental restraint system (SRS) includes a class-leading 10 standard air bags (dual front and side air bags, window curtain air bags on each side, second-row side air bags, and driver and front passenger knee air bags), says the automaker. Lexus also offers its innovative Pre-Collision System (PCS) and Lane Departure Alert (LDA) as options.

New for 2010, the GX 460 is fitted with active front headrests designed to move up and forward in the event of a rear-end collision. A new optional Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) adjusts the headlamps to illuminate the road while turning. Lexus also offers Intelligent High Beams (IHB) with headlight cleaners. The cleaners help keep the lens clean during inclement weather while sensors adjust between high and low headlamp settings automatically.

Technology
The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is available with both a Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Driver Attention Monitor and Lane Departure Alert (LDA). Two small cameras, mounted on the front of the vehicle, are designed to operate in conjunction with a very sensitive millimeter-wave radar system. A third camera is mounted on the steering column, watching the orientation of the driver's face. If the camera detects that the driver is not looking directly ahead for more than a few seconds-and if an obstacle is in the way-the system will alert the driver with a chime and a flashing light. If the driver fails to react, the PCS can gently start to apply the vehicle's brakes. To further assist the driver in an emergency avoidance maneuver, the system will also reprogram the steering ratio so it responds quicker to driver inputs, remove the slack from the seat belts, and prepare the braking system for impending activation.
