Top-Ranked Cars, Trucks, SUVs, and Minivans in the J.D. Power 2017 U.S. APEAL Study

    Appealing vehicles display attractive exterior and interior design, deliver engaging performance, and are packed with surprise-and-delight features.

    To measure owner satisfaction with these attributes, the annual J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM surveys thousands of new-vehicle buyers following the first 90 days of ownership, gathering responses to questions about 77 individual vehicle attributes. From this information, the company is able to determine which models in various market segments are the most appealing to their owners.

    This year, a total of 25 models receive an award for their overall appeal. Displayed in alphabetical order by make and model on the pages that follow, these are the top-ranked cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans for overall appeal in their respective segments.

    2017 Audi A3

    In the Small Premium Car segment, the Audi A3 is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017, in a tie with the BMW 2 Series. Audi updated the A3 lineup’s styling for 2017, improved the infotainment system, added a digital instrumentation option, and offered new safety systems. The high-performance RS 3 model also went on sale.

    In the Compact Premium Car segment, the Audi A4 ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Audi completely redesigned the A4 for 2017, the lineup including the A4 sedan, sport-tuned S4 sedan, and the A4 Allroad wagon. Depending on the version, buyers select from a turbocharged 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine, front- or all-wheel drive, and three trim levels.

    In the Midsize Premium Car segment, the Audi A7 is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017, in a tie with the Lincoln Continental. Standard sport styling arrived for the 2017 model year, along with additional standard equipment, Black Optic package, new 3.0T Competition version, and several performance upgrades for the RS 7 version.

    2017 BMW 2 Series

    In the Small Premium Car segment, the BMW 2 Series ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017, in a tie with the Audi A3. This year, the 2 Series received new engines, upgraded automatic transmission, and improved infotainment functions.

    In the Small Premium SUV segment, the BMW X1 is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. In its second year since a complete redesign, the X1 received few changes, continuing in front-drive and all-wheel-drive variants with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and surprising amounts of room inside.

    In the Large Premium SUV segment, the Cadillac Escalade ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Revised equipment packaging, new park-assist and rear camera mirror systems, new paint colors, and new 22-in. wheels summarize the changes to the Escalade for the 2017 model year.

    In the Small Car segment, the Chevrolet Bolt is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. An all-new model, the Bolt is an electric vehicle (EV) providing 238 miles of range for about $30,000 after applying the federal EV tax credit. Equipped with 5-passenger seating in a 5-door hatchback body style, the Bolt EV is an affordable electric car that is relatively easy to live with.

    In the Large SUV segment, the Chevrolet Tahoe ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Improved for the 2017 model year, the Tahoe added new safety-related technologies including Teen Driver report cards, rear-seat reminder system, and automatic emergency braking that works at low vehicle speeds. New colors and wheels debuted, too.

    In the Minivan segment, the Chrysler Pacifica is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. Though it has a new name, the Pacifica is the redesigned replacement for the old Town & Country. It offers several new innovations in a package powered by a V-6 engine or a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

    In the Midsize Sporty Car segment, the Dodge Challenger ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Dodge made numerous changes to the Challenger lineup for 2017, adding the all-wheel-drive GT model as well as new performance versions called the T/A and T/A 392, while also upgrading the infotainment system and adding new paint colors.

    In the Large Light Duty Pickup segment, the Ford F-150 is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. The big news for the 2017 model year is the reintroduced Raptor off-roader, powered by a new twin-turbocharged V-6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. New colors and Sync Connect technology also arrived.

    In the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment, the Ford F-Series Super Duty ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Redesigned for the 2017 model year, the new Super Duty is in nearly every respect the most modern and capable heavy-duty pickup truck you can buy.

    In the Compact SUV segment, the Honda CR-V is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. Honda redesigned the CR-V for the 2017 model year, adding a new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine for most trim levels, as well as Honda Sensing driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems. Comfort, cargo capacity, and improved infotainment systems are also along for the ride.

    In the Midsize Pickup segment, the Honda Ridgeline ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Following a brief hiatus, the Ridgeline returned to the lineup for the 2017 model year, based on the Pilot SUV platform and offering many of the features that made the original model a hit.

    In the Large Car segment, the Kia Cadenza is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. Kia redesigned the Cadenza for the 2017 model year, adding more distinctive styling, upgrading the interior, and installing more modern technologies. A 3.3-liter V-6 engine is standard, matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

    In the Small SUV segment, the Kia Niro ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Though it does not offer all-wheel drive, the Niro is marketed as a crossover SUV and comes standard with a hybrid drivetrain. Fuel economy ranges from 43 mpg to 50 mpg in combined driving, and the Niro provides up to 54.5 cu. ft. of cargo capacity.

    In the Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle segment, the Kia Soul is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. Roomier inside than most people expect, the 2017 Soul received a power injection courtesy of an available turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with a dual-clutch transmission.

    In the Midsize Premium Car segment, the Lincoln Continental ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017, in a tie with the Audi A7. This is Lincoln’s new flagship sedan, replacing the MKS and charting a new styling direction for the company. It comes in a variety of trim levels, with multiple drivetrain choices, and lots of innovative comfort, entertainment, and ownership perks.

    In the Compact Sporty Car segment, the Mini Cooper is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. Aside from a special-edition Hardtop model and an upgraded standard infotainment system, the Hardtop and Convertible versions were unchanged from the previous year.

    In the Compact Car segment, the Mini Clubman ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. Mini expanded the lineup for 2017, adding a new performance-tuned John Cooper Works version with more power fortified by mechanical component upgrades.

    In the Midsize Car segment, the Nissan Altima is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. This is an impressive feat, considering the design is five years old and that Nissan made no changes for the 2017 model year. A redesigned Altima is due soon.

    In the Midsize SUV segment, the Nissan Murano ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. The current Murano arrived for 2015, a 5-seat crossover with a standard V-6 engine and optional all-wheel drive. For 2017, it added Apple CarPlay at the same time that more versions came with drowsy driver monitoring.

    In the Midsize Premium Sporty Car segment, the Porsche 911 is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. For the 2017 model year, new turbocharged engines became standard for all versions, and Porsche updated the styling to provide visual reference to the change. Infotainment system upgrades also arrived, along with the powerful GTS model series.

    In the Midsize Premium SUV segment, the Porsche Cayenne ranks highest in overall appeal in 2017. As the Cayenne nears the end of its life-cycle, Porsche updated the infotainment system and introduced a new Platinum Edition version of selected 2017 trims.

    In the Compact Premium SUV segment, the Porsche Macan is the top-ranked model in overall appeal in 2017. A lower-priced entry-level model arrived this year, equipped with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The Macan also received an updated infotainment system.
