Top-Ranked Cars, Trucks, and SUVs in the J.D. Power 2018 U.S. Initial Quality Study

    The annual J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS)SM has served as a benchmark for owner satisfaction with new vehicles for more than three decades. It measures the number and type of problems verified owners have experienced with their new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership, based on assessments of more than 200 individual vehicle parameters.

    For 2018, 22 models receive an award for initial quality, and in two vehicle segments there were ties for top honors. Displayed in alphabetical order by make and model on the pages that follow, these are the new car, truck, SUV, and minivan models that rank highest for quality in their respective segments.

    2018 Acura ILX

    In the Small Premium Car segment, the Acura ILX is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. For the 2018 model year, Acura expanded availability of its AcuraWatch suite of safety technologies to all versions of the ILX, and introduced a new Special Edition of the car with the exterior appearance of the A-Spec trim at a discounted price.

    2018 BMW 4 Series

    In the Compact Premium Car segment, the BMW 4 Series is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. For the 2018 model year, BMW installed a new touch-screen iDrive 6.0 infotainment system in the 4 Series, and made changes to the suspension and steering to sharpen the car’s handling.

    2018 BMW X1

    In the Small Premium SUV segment, the BMW X1 is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018, in a tie with the Mercedes-Benz GLA. For the 2018 model year, BMW modified the X1’s equipment packaging and improved both the infotainment system’s service offerings as well as the SUV’s driver-assistance technologies.

    In the Midsize Premium SUV segment, the BMW X6 is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. BMW made few changes to the X6 for 2018, adjusting the SUV’s equipment packaging and making a handful of other minor changes.

    2018 Buick Envision

    In the Compact SUV category, the Buick Envision is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. Buick made no significant changes to the Envision for 2018. Notably, the Envision is built in China, a significant fact given the SUV’s ranking in the 2018 IQS.

    2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

    In the Large Light Duty Pickup segment, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. Though the Silverado has entered its last year before a complete redesign, Chevrolet nevertheless added standard equipment and introduced a new mild-hybrid eAssist system on certain versions of the truck.

    2018 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty

    In the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment, the Chevrolet Silverado HD is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018, in a tie with the Ford F-Series Super Duty. Chevrolet added a standard reversing camera and MyLink infotainment system for the 2018 model year.

    In the Minivan segment, the Dodge Grand Caravan is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. The Grand Caravan hasn’t changed much in recent years, an older design dating to 2008. However, Dodge made an important change to the 2018 model: structural changes to improve side-impact collision protection.

    In the Large SUV segment, the Ford Expedition is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. Completely redesigned for 2018, the new Expedition is offered in standard and extended lengths, and in several trim levels ranging from basic to luxurious. A twin-turbocharged V-6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission are standard.

    In the Midsize Sporty Car segment, the Ford Mustang is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. Ford made numerous changes to the 2018 Mustang, from styling to powertrain, and from infotainment to safety technologies. The exception is the Shelby GT350, which remained unchanged from 2017.

    In the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment, the Ford F-Series Super Duty is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018, in a tie with the Chevrolet Silverado HD. Following a complete redesign for the 2017 model year, changes for 2018 included a new Limited trim level, new F-450 rear-drive dually Crew Cab, and updates to the turbodiesel engine.

    In the Large Premium Car segment, the Genesis G90 is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. In its second year on the market, the G90 gained standard equipment across the board.

    2018 Hyundai Tucson

    In the Small SUV segment, the Hyundai Tucson is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. For the 2018 model year, Hyundai shuffled trim levels and equipment but made no substantial changes to the Tucson.

    In the Small Car segment, the Kia Rio is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. The Rio was completely redesigned for the 2018 model year, with added high-strength steel in its underlying architecture, an available automatic emergency braking system, and upgraded infotainment technology.

    In the Midsize SUV segment, the Kia Sorento is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. For 2018, Kia added standard equipment to selected trim levels and improved the SUV’s headlights.

    In the Midsize Premium Car segment, the Lincoln Continental is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. For the 2018 model year, Lincoln added value to the Continental, giving various iterations of the car extra standard equipment.

    In the Compact Premium SUV segment, the Lincoln MKC is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. Lincoln didn’t make any changes to the MKC for 2018, aside from installing a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot and updating paint colors.

    In the Small Premium SUV segment, the Mercedes-Benz GLA is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018, in a tie with the BMW X1. For the 2018 model year, Mercedes freshened the GLA’s styling and interior, upgraded the infotainment system, added an off-road suspension option, and improved the AMG’s transmission.

    In the Midsize Car segment, the Nissan Altima is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. For 2018, Nissan cancelled a couple of trim levels, revised option packaging, and added forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking as standard equipment.

    In the Midsize Pickup segment, the Nissan Frontier is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. For the 2018 model year, the base model gained a reversing camera, air conditioning, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity. A new Midnight Edition with a blacked-out appearance also debuted.

    In the Large Car category, the Nissan Maxima is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2018. Nissan made no substantial changes to the 2018 Maxima, but did include Android Auto smartphone-projection technology and two additional USB ports.
