2013 Initial Quality Study: Top-Ranked Models

Based on the results of the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS), the following models receive an award for ranking at the top of their respective vehicle segments. The award recipients are displayed in alphabetical order by make and model.
2013 Acura TL
The Acura TL ranks higher than the Infiniti G and the Cadillac CTS and receives the initial quality award in the Compact Premium Car segment. The 2013 TL is carried over from the previous model year with no significant changes.
2013 Buick Encore
The 2013 Encore, in a tie with the Kia Sportage, receives an initial quality award in the Sub-Compact CUV segment. The Buick Encore is a new model that installs upscaled equipment in a small crossover SUV package.
2013 Cadillac Escalade
The Cadillac Escalade, outperforming the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, receives the award in the Large Premium CUV segment. The only changes for the 2013 Escalade are five new paint colors.
2013 Chevrolet Avalanche
The Chevy Avalanche ties with the GMC Sierra in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment, receiving an initial quality award in its final year of production. Every 2013 Avalanche is a Black Diamond special edition with added standard equipment; Chevrolet has also lowered the price of the Avalanche for its final year.
2013 Chevrolet Camaro
Arch rivals Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang tie for the top spot in the Midsize Sporty Car segment in the 2013 Initial Quality Study, each receiving a quality award. In addition to adding new ZL1 Convertible and Hot Wheels Edition variants, Chevrolet offers a 1LE Performance package for SS Coupe models and installs MyLink technology with a color touch-screen radio as an option.
2013 Chevrolet Impala
In the Large Car segment, the Chevrolet Impala receives the initial quality award, outperforming the Hyundai Azera and Chrysler 300. This year, the 2013 Impala LT gets a new Luxury Edition package, and the OnStar telematics system adds FamilyLink vehicle location alerts. The Impala is redesigned for 2014, but this version continues as the Impala Limited.
2013 Chevrolet Silverado HD
The heavy-duty versions of the 2013 Silverado, denoted by 2500HD and 3500HD badges, rank highest in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup category, ahead of their corporate siblings, the GMC Sierra HD models. New colors and an available bi-fuel Compressed Natural Gas powertrain are the only changes for 2013.
2013 Chevrolet Tahoe
In the Large CUV segment, the Chevy Tahoe ranks higher than the Toyota Sequoia and receives the initial quality award. The 2013 Tahoe is offered in three new color choices and includes powertrain grade braking as standard equipment.
2013 Chrysler Town & Country
Chrysler's minivan ranks higher than the Honda Odyssey in the latest IQS, with the 2013 Town & Country receiving the award in the Minivan segment. This year, leather seats and Trailer Sway Damping are standard, and a new rear-seat entertainment system includes video game input jacks, rear USB ports, and a Blu-Ray DVD player.
2013 Ford Mustang
Ford ties with Chevy in this particular contest, with both the Mustang and the Camaro taking home awards for initial quality in the Midsize Sporty Car segment. Ford updates the 2013 Mustang's styling, improves the GT model's handling and acceleration, and gives the Shelby GT500 a thorough performance upgrade.
2013 GMC Sierra 1500
The GMC Sierra 1500, in a tie with the Chevrolet Avalanche, receives an initial quality award in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment. Both trucks rank higher than the runner-up in the category, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. In advance of a complete redesign for the 2014 model year, the 2013 Sierra gains new colors and standard powertrain grade braking.
2013 Honda Civic
The updated Honda Civic outperforms the Toyota Corolla and Honda Insight to earn an initial quality award in the Compact Car segment. The 2013 Civic is restyled, re-tuned, and equipped with new safety and infotainment technologies. Additionally, Honda upgraded the Civic's interior and strengthened its underlying body structure for 2013.
2013 Honda CR-V
In the Compact CUV segment, the 2013 CR-V ranks higher than the Toyota FJ Cruiser and the Chevrolet Equinox to earn an initial quality award. Because the Honda CR-V was completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, it receives no changes for 2013.
2013 Hyundai Genesis Sedan
With the Genesis sedan, Hyundai eclipses the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF, and Lexus GS to take home an award in the Midsize Premium Car segment. Among the changes made to the 2013 Genesis sedan are a revised navigation system, improved voice-recognition technology, new Blue Link telematics system, and standard Bluetooth streaming audio, all housed in a redesigned infotainment system.
2013 Infiniti FX
The Infiniti FX receives the initial quality award in the Midsize Premium CUV segment, outperforming the Lexus GX and the Porsche Cayenne. For 2013, the FX is equipped with a more powerful V-6 engine, offers optional Moving Object Detection technology, and is available in new color choices. Next year, this model will be called the QX70.
2013 Kia Soul
The 2013 Kia Soul ranks highest in the Compact MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) segment, outperforming the Mazda 5. This year, the Kia Soul has standard Bluetooth connectivity and is offered in a greater number of colors. A redesigned 2014 Soul is coming next year.
2013 Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage ties with the Buick Encore for highest rank in the Sub-Compact CUV segment and receives an award in the 2013 IQS. Both the Kia and the Buick rank higher than the Nissan Juke in the study. Kia makes minor changes to the 2013 Sportage models.
2013 Lexus LS
Within the Large Premium Car segment, the Lexus LS ranks higher than the Audi A8 and Porsche Panamera and receives the initial quality award. Additionally, the LS is the highest-performing model in the entire 2013 Initial Quality Study. For 2013, the Lexus LS receives extensive engineering and design changes, adds new safety and convenience technologies, and is offered in sporty new F Sport trim.
2013 Mazda 2
The 2013 Mazda 2 ranks higher than the Hyundai Accent and the Honda Fit to earn an award for initial quality in the Sub-Compact Car segment. Continuing a multi-year trend, Mazda makes no changes to the Mazda 2 for the latest model year.
2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata
In the Compact Sporty Car segment, the 2013 MX-5 Miata receives the initial quality award, ranking higher than the Volkswagen Eos and Volkswagen GTI. Mazda restyles the MX-5 Miata for 2013, adding a new Club model in the process.
2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class
The Mercedes GLK-Class earns the award for initial quality in the Compact Premium CUV segment, ranking higher than the Audi Allroad and Acura RDX. The restyled 2013 GLK-Class adds a new GLK250 BlueTec model with a clean diesel engine, while the GLK350 gains a more powerful and fuel-efficient V-6 engine. An Mbrace2 telematics system is standard.
2013 Nissan Murano
In its fifth year of production since its last major redesign, the Nissan Murano outperforms the Buick Enclave and Hyundai Santa Fe to earn the initial quality award in the midsize CUV segment. In addition to new safety technologies, the 2013 Murano's option packages are modified, new colors debut, and an optional Titanium finish is available for the wheels.
2013 Porsche 911
The legendary 911 is the highest-ranked Midsize Premium Sporty Car in terms of initial quality, and is the only model to rank above the segment average in the study. Porsche introduced a redesigned 911 for the 2012 model year, and continues expanding the lineup for 2013. At the same time, the automaker now offers an active cruise control system and Porsche Active Safe technology for the 2013 911.
2013 Porsche Boxster
The redesigned 2013 Boxster receives the initial quality award in the Compact Premium Sporty Car segment, ranking higher than the Nissan 370Z and the BMW Z4. Lighter, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient than ever, the new Boxster is also equipped with greater levels of technology than before.
2013 Smart Fortwo
In the new City Car segment, the 2013 Smart Fortwo ranks higher than the Chevrolet Spark to earn the initial quality award. In addition to new special-edition models and a Brabus Sport package, the 2013 Fortwo is offered as the new Smart Electric Drive model.
2013 Toyota Camry
In the Midsize Car segment, the 2013 Camry ranks higher than the Hyundai Sonata and Buick Regal to receive the initial quality award. For 2013, all Camry models are equipped with a color touch-screen radio, and Toyota expands availability of its Blind Spot Monitor, which now includes rear cross-traffic alert technology.
