12 Automakers Receive Initial Quality Recognition in 2015 IQS

Twelve of 15 automakers receive awards or are identified as having models ranking among the top three performers in each of the 26 car and light-truck segments that comprise the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS). Altogether, 69 models are identified for their higher level of initial quality in this year's IQS.

Among the 12 automakers, four multi-brand corporations--General Motors (GM); Hyundai Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co.; and Volkswagen AG--each receive four model awards at the segment level. Each of the four automakers also produces a significant number of models that rank among the top three in their respective vehicle segments.  BMW AG and Toyota Motor Corp. receive three model-level awards, while Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Ford Motor Co. receive two apiece. Mazda Motor Corp. receives one model-level award in this year's Initial Quality Study.

A summary of the 12 automakers' performances at the model level in the 2015 IQS are listed below.

General Motors
GM has 12 models (five cars and seven light trucks) that rank among the top three in initial quality at the segment level, the most of any automaker included in the study.
  • The Chevrolet brand receives four model awards at the segment level, including: Chevrolet Spark; Chevrolet Equinox (tie); Chevrolet Malibu; and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
  • Six more Chevrolet car and light-truck models rank among the top three in initial quality at the segment level: Chevrolet Sonic; Chevrolet Camaro; Chevrolet Impala; Chevrolet Traverse; Chevrolet Tahoe; and the Chevrolet Silverado HD.
  • The Buick Encore and GMC Terrain also rank among the top three models with the lowest number of problems in their respective segments.

Hyundai Motor Co.
Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co. has 11 models (five cars and six light trucks)--nearly as many as GM--that rank among the top three in initial quality at the segment level. Kia has seven, while Hyundai has four.
  • The company's four models that receive awards at the segment level for initial quality are: Hyundai Accent; Hyundai Tucson; Kia Soul; and the Kia Sorento.
  • In addition to the Soul and Sorento, five more Kia models are among the top three in their segment: Kia Rio; Kia Optima; Kia Cadenza; Kia Sportage; and the Kia Sedona.
  • Hyundai also has two models that rank second or third in their segment: Hyundai Elantra (tie); and the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Toyota Motor Corp.
Toyota Motor Corp., which includes premium Lexus and youth-oriented Scion brands, has eight models (five cars and three light trucks) that rank among the top three models in their respective segments.
  • Three Toyota Motor Corp. models receive awards at the segment level: two Toyota-brand trucks (Tacoma and Sequoia), and the Lexus LS, which is the highest-performing model in the study in terms of initial quality.
  • Two other Toyota-brand models among the top three at the segment level were the Corolla (tie) and Camry.
  • Scion has one model that scores among the top three in its segment: the tC.
  • In addition to the segment-leading LS, two other Lexus models rank among the top three in their respective segments: the Lexus NX (tie) and Lexus ES.

Volkswagen AG
Also with eight models (five cars and three light trucks) among the top three in their segment is German automaker Volkswagen AG.
  • Four segment-award recipients are from VW Group's premium brands: Audi (Q3) and Porsche (Boxster, Macan, and 911).
  • Other models in the Porsche lineup that are also among the top three in initial quality in their segment: Cayman; Cayenne; and the Panamera.
  • In addition, the VW Eos ranks among the top three models at the segment level.

Ford Motor Co.
Ford Motor Company has seven models (two cars and five light trucks) that rank among the top three in initial quality at the segment level.
  • Ford's two segment award recipients in the 2015 IQS are: Ford Escape (tie); and Ford F-Series Super Duty.
  • The Ford Expedition and four Lincoln models--the MKZ; MKS; MKX; and the Navigator--also rank among the top three at the segment level.

Nissan Motor Co.
Nissan Motor Co. also has seven models (two cars and five light trucks) in the top three in their segment; four receive awards for ranking highest in their respective segments.
  • Award recipients include: Nissan Sentra and Nissan Quest, and the Infiniti QX70 and QX80 premium SUVs.
  • Three other models that rank among the top three in their respective segments are: the Nissan Frontier, Infiniti Q70, and the Infiniti QX50 (tie).

BMW AG
  • Three of luxury automaker BMW AG's car models receive segment-level awards in the 2015 IQS: the BMW 2 Series; BMW 4 Series; and the BMW 5 Series. Also ranking among the top three in initial quality at the segment level is the BMW 7 Series.

Daimler AG
  • Although Mercedes-Benz didn't receive any segment-level awards for initial quality, four of its models did rank among the top three in their segment, including: the SL-Class; GLA-Class; GLK-Class; and the GL-Class.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA)
  • Two of FCA's car models receive a segment award in the 2015 IQS: the Dodge Challenger and the Chrysler 300.
  • Two of the company's light-truck models are among the top three in their segment: the Chrysler Town & Country and the Ram 1500.

The final three corporations, which collectively produce four models among the top three in their respective segment, are:
  • Jaguar Land Rover--has one passenger car and one SUV model that rank among the top three of their respective segment: the Jaguar F-Type and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
  • Mazda Motor Corp.--receives a segment-level award for its Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster.
  • Honda Motor Co.--The Acura ILX ranks among the top three models in its segment, although only two models in the segment perform above segment average.
