  Honda Introduces New Diesel
Everyone's got a pretty good sense of what the German manufacturers have planned on the diesel front. After all, it's their strong suit and the core of their business in their home market and throughout Europe. But when it comes to Honda, particularly in the U.S., the picture is more complex. After all, this is the company that has the highest corporate average fuel economy, was the first to introduce a hybrid car in America, and prides itself on its environmental image. The backstory that has been passed along is this: Honda engineers were not eager to introduce a diesel in the European market, though they were told it was key to success there. So they designed what they like to call a "Honda" diesel and introduced it to the market with a psychedelic ad narrated by Garrison Keillor.

  New for 2011: Honda
HistoryHonda Motor Company, a Japanese automaker, was founded in 1948. The company originally constructed small engine parts for Toyota-a manufacturer that would eventually become one of its biggest rivals. The Toyota deal ended shortly thereafter and Honda focused on launching a line of small fuel-efficient engines that were used to power bicycles. The natural progression of that business led the growing company to build motorcycles, and eventually automobiles. While Honda is well-known for fuel efficiency and smaller vehicles, the manufacturer began a racing program in the mid-1960s that still continues today. In 1986, the company launched its own line of premium vehicles under its Acura brand. Toyota and Nissan followed its lead and launched their Lexus and Infiniti premium brands several years later.
