10 Insurance Friendly Vehicles for 2012

By Jeff Youngs, August 10, 2012
Car insurance rates are based upon numerous factors, including a driver's age, gender, driving record, city or zip code of residence, and the year, make and model of vehicle. According to, the type of vehicle to drive if you want the lowest possible insurance rates is a crossover SUV, minivan, or a pickup truck. For 2012, here are the 10 least-expensive vehicles to insure, based on data and listed in alphabetical order:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500
The Chevy Silverado is a full- pickup truck available in a variety of cab styles and trim levels, with a choice of powertrains. The regular cab and extended cab models are the least expensive to insure.

Dodge Grand Caravan
A descendant of the original minivan, the Dodge Grand Caravan carries up to 7 passengers and features Stow 'N Go seating that flips and folds into the floor to maximize cargo space. Of the numerous models available, it is the Grand Caravan SXT model that is the least expensive to insure.

Dodge Journey
This 3-row crossover SUV is available with a 4- or 6-cylinder engine and front- or all-wheel drive in a number of different trim levels. The one that will produce the lowest monthly premium, however, is the Journey SXT.

Ford Escape
The Ford Escape is a strong-selling crossover SUV, and the Escape XLS makes the list of least-expensive models to insure. Just keep in mind that this trim level is available only with a 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive.

GMC Sierra 1500
If you don't like the way the Chevy Silverado looks, perhaps the GMC Sierra is more appealing. Like the Chevy, the Sierra is available in just about any configuration you can imagine, but for insurance purposes, the regular cab models feature the lowest premiums.

Honda Odyssey
The Honda Odyssey minivan is a popular choice with families, and the least-expensive version, the Odyssey LX, is also one of the most affordable vehicles to insure.

Jeep Compass
A compact crossover SUV, the Jeep Compass is available with a Trail Rated 4WD system that gives the little sport utility vehicle extra off-road capability. The Sport trim level is the base model, and it's the one that is most affordable to insure.

Jeep Patriot
The Jeep Patriot is essentially the same vehicle as the Jeep Compass, but equipped with a boxier body. It, too, offers Trail Rated off-road capability, combined with affordable insurance rates in Sport trim.

Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage was redesigned for 2011, and carries on today as the automaker's entry-level crossover SUV. Though offered with an optional turbocharged engine, it is the standard model with the smallest power plant that gets the cheap insurance policy.

Toyota Sienna
The Toyota Sienna is unique amongst primary minivan competitors in that it offers a 4-cylinder engine for base and LE models. It is these versions of the Sienna that not only make this list, but are the two least-expensive models to insure for 2012.
