World to See Fastback Mazda MX-5 RF at New York Auto Show

By Philly Murtha, March 22, 2016
Mazda will display its 2017 MX-5 RF sports car with a retractable hardtop at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. The latest addition to the MX-5 line is a “retractable fastback” that is sleeker and more aerodynamic with more dramatic fenders than the conventional Mazda MX-5. A few exterior styling differences include a smooth roofline that slopes down to the rear end and gives the MX-5 RF the look of a higher-end sports car. The 2-seater becomes part coupe and part convertible.

The new 2017 MX-5 RF, which premieres this week, features a power targa-like roof that can be opened or closed by just pressing a button, even while moving at nearly 6 mph. Targa, which was first used by Porsche for its early sports cars and is a Porsche registered trademark, refers to a roof section that is removable over the cockpit, but still leaves a full rollbar section or part of the roof behind the driver and passenger. The hardtop stows within a very small space behind the cockpit.

Even with fastback styling and a hardtop roof, the MX-5 RF offers the same amount of trunk space as the soft-top model, according to Mazda.
In the U.S. market, the new sporty open-top MX-5 RF will be powered by Mazda’s SkyActiv-G 2.0 gasoline engine. The exciting MX-5 RF can be pre-ordered late this summer, although pricing has yet to be revealed.
