VW Goes Retro with Limited-Edition 2016 Beetle Denim

By Philly Murtha, November 17, 2015

This week, Volkswagen announced production of a special-edition 2016 Beetle Denim model that honors the Beetle Jeans model from the 1970s. Only 2,000 of these unique Beetle compact cars with denim-like soft tops and retro interior design features will be produced. These “collector” cars can be ordered now and will arrive at dealerships early next year.

Equipped with 17-in. Heritage design wheels, the limited edition will come in two exterior colors—1,000 each in Pure White and Stonewashed Blue. The model’s convertible top is made from a Dark Blue textured fabric that resembles denim.

The ‘70s blue jeans sporty flavor will be carried out with unique seat pockets accessorized with small Beetle red tabs, according to VW officials. The Beetle Denim’s cabin will feature a unique light-blue and silver dash and seating surfaces will be upholstered in light blue denim-colored cloth accented in perky white piping and dark blue leatherette.

Since it’s a 2016 model, the Beetle Denim also will come with VW’s new MIB II color infotainment system with crisper graphics and higher resolution than the previous system. A 5.0-in. touch-screen display includes standard features such as an auxiliary input, SD card slots, a USB multimedia interface, smartphone connectivity, and Bluetooth. A rearview camera also is standard.

The short-run Denim Beetle model will be powered by a 1.8-liter, turbocharged TSI engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission that generates 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque.

Through the first 10 months of 2015, Volkswagen has delivered 20,345 Beetles in the United States, down 24% from 25,247 units in the same period a year ago, according to data collected by J.D. Power and auto forecasting partner LMC Automotive.
