VW Boosts Range in 2017 e-Golf, Debuts EV at L.A. Auto Show

By Philly Murtha, November 17, 2016
This week, Volkswagen revealed its next-generation 2017 e-Golf compact electric car at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. The newest e-Golf promises up to a 50% improvement in driving range, and VW claims it can travel 124 miles before it needs a recharge. The automaker also said the new e-Golf exhibits more power and torque than the previous model.

The latest 2017 e-Golf features a redesigned front and rear, similar to other new VW Golf model variants, and has upgraded full LED lighting systems. The new-generation electric variant is equipped with a larger-capacity Lithium-ion battery—35.8 kWh instead of 24 kWh—to power the upgraded electric motor that now delivers 134 horsepower—19 more horsepower than the previous e-Golf. Torque has also been enhanced from 199 lb.-ft. to 214 lb.-ft. The new e-Golf is also a second faster from 0-60 mph—now achieving that mark in 9.6 seconds—and now has a top speed of 93 mph, VW says.

Charging is also faster for the new e-Golf. An onboard 7.2-kW charger is standard equipment on SE and SEL Premium trims, which allows full charging within 6 hours at a traditional charging station. Additionally, an optional DC Fast Charging battery can be charged to 80% in an hour at a DC fast-charging station.

In addition to the powertrain upgrades, there’s a host of new technology featured inside the 2017 e-Golf’s cabin, including new infotainment options such as a 9.2-in. infotainment screen and VW’s Digital Cockpit. Additionally, the 2017 e-Golf’s advanced safety technologies now include new front assist and pedestrian monitoring. An upgraded driver-assistance package now features adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, and rear-traffic alert, plus lane-departure warning and high-beam headlight control.
