Volvo Updates 2014 Model Lineup with Cosmetic Changes, Technology Upgrades

By Jeff Youngs, February 22, 2013
A Volvo has announced significant cosmetic changes, as well as technological upgrades for the majority of its models for the 2014 model year. The S60 sedan, V60 station wagon, XC60 crossover, V70 station wagon, XC70 crossover, and S80 sedan will all have a different look in the coming year. The 2014 vehicles will display changes to the front grilles, bumpers, head- and taillights, hoods, and rear ends; slight changes to the instrument panels will also be evident. The changes will be about the same for each, and will result in a more conservative and more uniform appearance, Volvo says.

These changes will be on display for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show, which opens March 5, and are a prelude to Volvo's new design language expected to be introduced for the 2015 model year.

The exterior changes will affect the front of these vehicles more than the rear. All will feature a longer, less angular hood. The S80 and V70 will have wider front grilles with upgraded detailing. The rear end on each model will feature restyled tailpipes and bumper, as well as more chrome. Both will be available with 19-inch wheels. The XC70 will have similar but less extensive changes. All models will feature rectangular daytime running lights.

Volvo's most revolutionary technological advancement for 2014 is the new Sensus Connected Touch infotainment system, which uses infrared scanners on the sides of the 7-inch display screen that will allow the operator to work the system while wearing gloves. The system will work through either a car-mounted system or the operator's mobile phone. The S80 and XC70 will also feature updated versions of Volvo's City Safety system, which detects pedestrians and potentially dangerous objects, plus a system that will show road signs on a display screen.

The interior of the S80 will feature upgraded leather, as well as two new luxury option packages, and its new crystal display system will feature a choice of three theme settings. The Elegance setting is the default; the Eco theme will use green background lightings and will emphasize fuel economy; the red-lit Performance theme will emphasize power. The S60 and XC60 will have different sport seats, and the S60 will offer a range of new interior colors and wood trim options, and a new headliner, all of which are calculated to produce a warmer, friendlier ambiance. Volvo notes that the color schemes will coordinate with the backlit white dash controls.

Powertrains will apparently remain the same for 2014 on all Volvo models.
