Volkswagen Unveils New Sporty Look, Features on 2016 Jetta GLI

By Philly Murtha, June 10, 2015

Volkswagen took the wraps off the 2016 Jetta GLI performance version of its best-selling compact sedan, which has a slightly more aggressive look and extra features, including a specially-tuned sport suspension and the same 210-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that powers the Golf GTI. The new Jetta GLI is slated to arrive in showrooms this fall.

Bolder tweaks to the Jetta GLI's front fascia include a honeycomb grille and square fog lights in addition to a new rear bumper design with a diffuser and chrome-tipped exhaust. In addition, the new Jetta GLI is equipped with 18-in. Mallory aluminum-alloy wheels.

Advanced safety systems are standard on both trim levels of the 2016 Jetta GLI. Included is VW's Automatic Post-Collision Braking system that applies the brakes when a collision is detected by air bag sensors, limiting additional collision damage.

The new 2016 VW Jetta GLI, based on the sixth-generation Jetta model that was refreshed for 2015, receives new cabin technology features, including the new MIB 2 infotainment system with USB and VW Car-Net connectivity. Other features on a well-equipped SE trim level are LED taillights, keyless entry with push-button start, dual-zone climate control, sunroof, 6-way power driver seat, rearview camera, and front and rear park-assist system. Also, a Fender premium audio system, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, and heated seats are part of the new GLI SE package.

The higher-end SEL trim level of the 2016 GLI adds upscale features including blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, navigation system, bi-xenon headlights, and an adaptive lighting system that swivels by up to 15% as the steering wheel turns to better illuminate road curves.

Pricing for the new 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI will be revealed closer to the model's launch. Pricing for the current 2015 Jetta tops out at $27,500.

Through May 2015, total Jetta sales in the United States were 55,938, down from 64,217 in the same five-month period of 2014, based on sales data collected by J.D. Power and LMC Automotive.
