Volkswagen Phases Out Workhorse Engine in Favor of Turbo 4-Cylinder

In a recent statement enumerating changes to its product lineup for the 2014 model year, Volkswagen announced that it is beginning the process of phasing out its 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder engine for an equally powerful 1.8-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that generates more torque and provides greater fuel economy.

The new 1.8-liter, direct-injection turbo is rated to deliver 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Compare that with the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder it replaces, which generates 170 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. Plus, VW says the new engine's torque will peak lower in the rev range, which will help make the car feel more responsive when accelerating.

Initially, the Jetta SE Sedan, Jetta SEL Sedan, and Passat SEL will get the new turbocharged engine. During the course of the 2014 model year, all Passat trim levels will receive the new motor as standard equipment, as well as the Volkswagen Beetle. Official fuel-economy ratings will be available closer to the date on which the vehicles go on sale.

The Jetta Sportwagen and an abbreviated run of 2014 Golf 5-door models will continue to employ the old 5-cylinder engine.
