Volkswagen Passat Performance Concept Hints at Things to Come

Volkswagen Passat Performance Concept Hints at Things to Come

By Jeff Youngs, January 14, 2013
At the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volkswagen plans to display the Passat Performance Concept, a vehicle that looks like it is ready to roll right off of an assembly line and into Volkswagen dealer showrooms. Volkswagen says the Passat Performance Concept "gives a sneak-peek at (an) upcoming sport sedan."

The Passat Performance Concept's primary highlight is a turbocharged and direct-injected, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 250 horsepower--50 more than the current turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that Volkswagen employs in the Beetle, CC, Eos, GTI, Jetta GLI, and Tiguan. It is not a stretch to assume that the new 1.8-liter engine also develops more torque than the current 2.0-liter motor. A 6-speed automatic transmission puts the power to the Passat Performance Concept's front wheels.

Additional highlights for the Passat Performance Concept include 19-inch aluminum wheels, sport suspension, electro-mechanical steering, and a dual exhaust system. Bi-xenon headlights with an Advanced Front Lighting System and LED taillights are included, and the interior has two-tone leather seats as well as a black headliner and pillar trim. The Passat Performance Concept will also be decorated with "carbon-like touches" inside and out. That would be the conceptual part of the car.
