Toyota Prius is Most Popular Car in California

By Jeff Youngs, March 13, 2013
People from other parts of the United States may vacation in California and assume that everyone drives a vehicle with a luxury brand affixed to its hood or grille, but based on registration data from 2012, it is the Toyota Prius family that is most popular in the Golden State. Californians registered 61,893 of them in 2012, including the standard Prius, the plug-in Prius, the compact Prius c, and the largest model in the lineup, the Prius v.

In a statement, Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager of Toyota Motor Sales, Inc., said: "Consumers are drawn to the Prius vehicles because of the brand's focus on efficiency. All four distinct Prius models offer outstanding fuel economy."

The smallest model in the Prius family is the Prius c, a subcompact 5-door hatchback rated by the EPA to get 50 mpg in combined driving. This EPA rating matches the standard Prius, and the Prius Plug-in model is rated to get 95 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) thanks to its ability to drive more than 10 miles on electricity alone, as long as the vehicle doesn't exceed 60 mph.

Shoppers who think a Prius isn't big enough for their needs might wish to consider the Prius v model. The "v," according to Toyota, stands for "versatility." Toyota says that the Prius v can carry 34.3 cubic feet of cargo behind its rear seat, more than double the space inside a Camry's trunk, while returning 42 mpg in combined driving.
