Tesla Adds Performance Plus Package to Model S

Tesla Adds Performance Plus Package to Model S

By Jeff Youngs, May 07, 2013
Electric vehicle maker Tesla is offering a new option for its Model S electric sports sedan--a suspension, wheel, and tire package designed to improve handling. According to Tesla, the option "takes one of the world's best sedans into supercar handling territory."

The $6,500 Performance Plus package includes a sport-tuned suspension, choice between gray or silver 21-inch aluminum wheels, and staggered-width 245/35 front and 265/35 rear Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. According to Tesla, the new rubber both improves grip and adds between 6 and 12 miles of driving range compared with other models with 21-inch wheels.

Tesla will offer some of the Performance Plus package's suspension upgrades to existing Model S owners. The retuned dampers and upgraded stabilizer bars are not offered as a part of the retrofit package, but Tesla will install the bigger wheels, better tires, and rear suspension components including new lower control arms, upper links, and stiffer bushings. The cost of the retrofit package is $13,500. Starting price (after $7,500 federal tax credit) of the Tesla Model S with 60-kWh Lithium-ion battery is $62,400.
