Subaru to Debut First Plug-in Hybrid 2019 Crosstrek Small SUV

By Philly Murtha, May 14, 2018
Subaru, known for all-wheel-drive (AWD) utilities, revealed this week that it will launch its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)—the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid—at year’s end. The 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid small SUV, which can seat 5, will feature enhanced fuel efficiency and can be driven with combined gas engine and electric power to eliminate range anxiety, especially on long trips, Subaru officials said. Pure electric mode also will be available for local commutes.

Subaru, which is partly owned by Toyota, is creating a PHEV by taking advantage of Toyota’s Hybrid System (THS) in collaboration with its own 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine that produces 152 horsepower, plus its noted symmetrical AWD configuration and an all-new transmission that sends power to all four wheels. Similar to its current conventional gas-powered variants, the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid will be built on the carmaker’s new global platform with more high-strength steel that has been designed to accommodate hybrid and electric powertrains. The Subaru Crosstrek is based on the Impreza compact car architecture, but is taller with utility vehicle styling.

Previously, Subaru marketed a traditional hybrid Crosstrek for the 2014-2016 model years, which had an EPA-estimated combined mileage range of 31 mpg vs. 29 mpg combined (city/highway) for the conventional gas-powered version, when partnered with a more efficient continuously variable automatic transmission.

More details about the new Subaru Crosstrek PHEV will be revealed closer to the vehicle’s launch.
