Redesigned BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon Confirmed

By Jeff Youngs, May 16, 2012
BMW has confirmed that a redesigned 3 Series Sports Wagon will go on sale in the United States during the first quarter of 2013.

Based on the all-new 2012 3 Series Sedan, the new 3 Series Wagon is longer, wider, and roomier inside than the car it replaces, adding rear-seat space and 10% more cargo volume, according to BMW. It will feature a tailgate design with a rear window that opens separately for easier loading of small items, and a power tailgate option will offer the ability to open it by waving a foot under the rear bumper, as long as the available Comfort Access key is on your person. This is handy when carrying an armload of items that cannot easily be put down.

The new 3 Series Sports Wagon will also have standard roof rails, a cargo net and strap on the right side of the luggage compartment, storage wells and trays under the cargo area floor, tie-down hooks, a cargo cover, and a partition net useful to pet owners. The rear seat is a 40/20/40-split design allowing the redesigned 3 Series Wagon to transport four adults and their skis and snowboards.

According to BMW, the new 3 Series Wagon will be sold in Sport, M Sport, Luxury, and Modern trim levels. Standard equipment will include LED running lights, LED taillights, and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. Safety features include BMW Assist telematics with Automatic Collision Notification, and the 3 Series Wagon will be available with a rearview camera system that provides a 360-degree top-down view of the car and its surroundings, a blind-spot warning system, and a lane-departure warning system.

Additional options that BMW has confirmed include a panoramic glass sunroof, BMW Parking Assist, BMW Apps smartphone integration technology with Internet radio streaming and social media feed display, and a color Head-up Display. Adaptive headlights with BMW's distinctive corona-ring driving lights will also be offered.

At this time, BMW is not divulging powertrain details, though a 328i model equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, automatic start/stop technology, and Driving Dynamics Control is almost certain. Complete powertrain, pricing, and equipment details will be available closer to the car's arrival in dealer showrooms.
